Shilpa shety as itom song

If Shilpa Shetty moves lock that will be Bollywood’s loss, stock and barrel to London.
Yet to make her mark in the film industry here after her phenomenal success in the UK reality show Big Brother last year, Shilpa is being seen to be more and more involved in London-based events than anything in India. The latest at a primary school in London, was a global initiative this week to make a difference to generation next and raise the morale of young people all over the world. Its proved Shilpa using her iconic status to advantage and join forces with the likes of Desperate Housewives actress Andrea Bowen, T4’s Miquita Oliver, Blue Peter’s Zoe Salmon and ex-Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon. They have all conducted similar workshops in various schools across Britain.
Facilitating a discussion about personality development with a class of youngsters in the age group of 11 to 14, Shilpa said that there have been moments in her career where she has struggled with self-esteem, so she is really pleased to be doing this workshop. As a person in the public eye, she understands the important role she can play in making a difference to the way young people feel about themselves. She also educated them on a wider definition of beauty and the reality behind the images of beauty they see in the media.

Krazzy 4 - If you think they r crazy, think again!
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, February 16, 2008]
The next film that is in the making for Producer- Rakesh Roshan/Filmkraft Productions (India) Pvt. Ltd. is a hilarious comedy flick ‘Krazzy 4’. With ‘Krazzy 4’, Rakesh Roshan hands over the directorial baton to Jaideep Sen even as he revels in the role of producer par excellence!
So impressed was Rakesh Roshan with Jaideep's dedication and willingness to learn, that he has entrusted his next film ‘Krazzy 4’ into Jai’s capable hands. The fact that this is the first film under the Filmkraft banner to be directed by somebody other than Rakesh Roshan, speaks volume for the faith he has reposed in his protégé.
The music for this film is by Rajesh Roshan, another integral part of the Roshan family. He has composed award-winning music for ‘Khudgarz’, ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’, ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’, ‘Khel’, ‘King Uncle’, ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Koyla’. His music for ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’ outperformed all his past work and topped every music chart. Now with ‘Krazzy 4’, Rajesh Roshan delivers a thumping, foot-tapping score yet again.
Character Sketches :
As the name suggests, it is a mad, mad, mad world out there. Some are nutty about money, some deranged about power, some of them cracked with stress, some others unhinged by overwork and yet a few others insanely in love, and everyone is worried they are going bananas.
Except the ‘Krazzy 4’, because they are already crazy!
The beautiful Juhi plays Dr. Sonali, a psychiatrist who knows what is wrong with her patients. As a sensitive woman she firmly believes if you really want to make your patients well, you should treat them with your heart, not just your mind. She has faith that all it needs is a little time and lots of patience to make them normal…to make them part of the mad, mad, mad world out there…
Arshad Warsi plays the angry young man, Raja. His blood boils, his fists clench and he's ready to beat the daylights out of anyone who upsets him in some way. Raja's anger knows no bounds, he'll hit out at the slightest provocation or even without. Intermittent explosive disorder is what the doctors call it. 'Sarphira', is what everybody else does!
Irrfan Khan plays Dr. Mukherjee, your perfect doc – clean and orderly, not a pin out of place. . So what's wrong with that? Obsessive compulsive personality disorder, that's what. He has decided that he's the Captain of the team! But so obsessed is he by the need to be in control of a situation that he doesn't realise he has totally lost control of himself and his mind.
Rajpal Yadav essays the role of Gangadhar who is marching to a beat only he can hear; he's fighting for a cause that's long over. But in his muddled mind he's still fighting for freedom, still hobnobbing with the likes of Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. Schizophrenic Gangadhar lives in the past…his mates are Nehru and Gandhi, Tilak and Patel! He's so busy fighting for swaraj, he's lost his sanity!
Suresh Menon is Dabboo. Cute Dabboo is everybody's pet. So what if he hasn't spoken for years? So what if he's frightened all the time? So what if he's autistic? Cute and adorable, when it comes to Dabboo everybody is super protective. Even if he can hear and understand, Dabboo refuses to speak. And nobody knows why!
Dia Mirza plays the role of Shikha the girl friend of Raja (Arshad Warsi). As a TV reporter she controls the news on the channel, but as a woman she is unable to control the unruly and unmanageable rage of Raja - the man she loves.
Rajat Kapur plays R. K. Sanyal who is an Industrialist. Oh, and also Dr Sonali's husband. But in his quest for power and money he takes a step that will have alarming consequences for his wife and her patients – the krazzy 4!
Zaakir Hussain as Srivastav is so neck deep in illegal activities that now he'll stoop to anything – even kidnapping and murder – to keep him ahead.
Watch out! The ‘Krazzy 4’ are coming your way!! If all goes well the film will be released on April 11, 2008.
But are the ‘Krazzy 4’ ready for the world? And is the world ready for them? We have to wait and watch.
And yes...If you think they are crazy, think again! Just sit back tight and get set for an extremely funny roller coaster ride with the ‘Krazzy 4’!

Hubble finds first organic molecule on extrasolar planet

19 March 2008
The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has made the first detection ever of an organic molecule in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star. This breakthrough is an important step in eventually identifying signs of life on a planet outside our Solar System.
Hubble found the tell-tale signature of methane in the atmosphere of the Jupiter-sized extrasolar planet HD 189733b. Under the right circumstances, methane can play a key role in prebiotic chemistry – the chemical reactions considered necessary to form life as we know it. Although methane has been detected on most of the planets in our Solar System, this is the first time any organic molecule has been detected on a world orbiting another star.
This discovery proves that Hubble and upcoming space missions, such as the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, can detect organic molecules on planets around other stars using spectroscopy, which splits light into its components to reveal the fingerprints of various chemicals.
Extrasolar planet HD 189733b
“This is a crucial stepping stone to eventually characterising prebiotic molecules on planets where life could exist”, said Mark Swain of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), USA, who led the team that made the discovery. Swain is lead author of a paper to be published in tomorrow’s issue of Nature.
The discovery comes after extensive observations in May 2007 carried out with Hubble’s Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). It also confirms the existence of water molecules in the planet’s atmosphere, a discovery originally made by co-author Giovanna Tinetti in 2007 while she was an ESA fellow at Institute d’Astrophysique de Paris, France, using NASA’s Spitzer space telescope.
“With this observation there is no question whether there is water or not – water is present”, said Swain.
HD 189733b and its parent star (artist's impression)
The planet HD 189733b, now known to have methane and water vapour, is located 63 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula, the little fox. HD 189733b, a hot Jupiter-type extrasolar planet, is so close to its parent star that it takes just over two days to complete an orbit. Hot Jupiters are the size of Jupiter but orbit closer to their stars than Mercury, the innermost planet in our Solar System. HD 189733b’s atmosphere swelters at 900ºC, about the same temperature as the melting point of silver.
The observations were made as the planet passed in front of its parent star in what astronomers call a transit. As the light from the star passed briefly through the atmosphere along the edge of the planet, the gases in the atmosphere imprinted their unique signatures on the light from the star HD 189733.
Giovanna Tinetti, now affiliated to University College added, “Water alone could not explain all the spectral features observed. The additional contribution of methane is necessary to fit the Hubble data”.
Wide-field view of the Summer Triangle
Methane, composed of carbon and hydrogen, is one of the main components of natural gas, a product of petroleum. On Earth, methane is produced by a variety of sources: natural sources such as termites, the oceans and wetland environments, but also from livestock and manmade sources such as waste landfills and as a by-product of energy generation.
Tinetti is however quick to rule out any biological origin of the methane found on HD 189733b. “The planet’s atmosphere is far too hot for even the hardiest life to survive — at least the kind of life we know from Earth. It’s highly unlikely that cows could survive here!”
The astronomers were surprised to find that the planet has more methane than predicted by conventional models for hot Jupiters. This type of hot planet should have much more carbon monoxide than methane but HD 189733b doesn’t.
Wide-field view of HD 189733b and surroundings
Tinetti adds: “A sensible explanation is that the Hubble observations were more sensitive to the dark night-side of this planet where the atmosphere is slightly colder and the photochemical mechanisms responsible for methane destruction are less efficient than on the day-side”.
Although this star-hugger is too hot for life as we know it, “this observation is proof that spectroscopy can eventually be done on a cooler and potentially habitable Earth-sized planet orbiting a dimmer red dwarf-type star”, Swain said.
The ultimate goal of studies like these is to identify prebiotic molecules in the atmospheres of planets in the habitable zones around other stars, where temperatures are right for water to remain liquid rather than freeze or evaporate away.
“These measurements are an important step to our ultimate goal of determining the conditions, such as temperature, pressure, winds, clouds, etc., and the chemistry on planets where life could exist. Infrared spectroscopy is really the key to these studies because it is best matched to detecting molecules”, said Swain.
Notes for editors:
The paper ‘Methane present in an extrasolar planet atmosphere’ by Mark Swain, Gautam Vasisht and Giovanna Tinetti is being published in the 20 March issue of the journal Nature.
Giovanna Tinetti was an ESA Research Fellow at University College London until October 2007, where she is now based.

Amitabh Bachchan-Shah Rukh Khan together!

Subhash K. Jha, IANS [Wednesday, April 06, 2005]
It's the casting coup of the year. Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are being brought together by Karan Johar - not in a film but on a TV chat show.
In what promises to be the grandest grand-finale ever seen on television, Bachchan and Shah Rukh will be the guests on the show "Koffee With Karan".
For the final episode, Karan had planned something "incredibly spectacular". And what more than the two biggest superstars of our times?
This mega event, to be telecast at the end of May, was quietly recorded on the night of April 4.
That's not all. The enterprising host gets three major directors - Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Farah Khan and Farhan Akhtar - to come on the show to talk about the two stars. What's more, Karan also invites Shah Rukh and Bachchan's favorite co-stars Kajol and Jaya Bachchan respectively on the sets to talk with the two megastars.
Quite a "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" on television, huh? "That, you'll just have to wait and see. Right now I'm not saying anything about the grand finale," chuckles Johar.
"All I can say at the moment is, I've had a ball doing the show. 'Koffee With Karan' has opened a new door and it has made my audience look at me as a different entity. I'm no longer asked what film I'm making. I'm asked who am I recording my next 'Koffee...' segment with.
"Whenever I'm seen having coffee at a restaurant I'm thrown a 'Koffee...' joke. Everyone thinks he got there first. Little do they know that I've been besieged with such jokes ever since I began the show.
"Now I've had enough. I need to get back to making a film. But I'll be back with 'Koffee...' next year."
Before the season ends, Johar hopes to record episodes with Shahid Kapur and Esha Deol, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, and Hema Malini and Zeenat Aman.
Mahesh goes a step ahead with 'Jalsa'

[Monday, March 17, 2008]
It is a known fact that Telugu heroes do not share a similar camaraderie as their Bollywood counterparts. There, it is common for Shah Rukh and Salman to appear together, for SRK to do an item song in Akshay's film and for BIg B to introduce Hrithik's 'Jodha Akbar'.
Now, slowly, the winds of change and marketing tactics are affecting the filmmaking gamut of Telugu industry too.
While we have had heroes like Srikant and Jagapati Babu doing special roles in films of top heroes, not many top heroes come together on screen.
Though this is still a long way away, Mahesh Babu has gone a step ahead and given a voice over for Pawan Kalyan's 'Jalsa', that is due for release on March 28.
Though Mahesh was not returning any favours for Pawan, it was Trivikram Srinivas who managed to cajole him to do it.
So, apart from Pawan Kalyan, we'll also get to hear Mahesh in the film. Jalsa for their fans, isn't it?

Black & White: Hindi Film Review 03/09/08

Starring : Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Anuraag Sinha, Aditi Sharma. Habib Tanvir Direction: Subash Ghai
Subash Ghai finally makes for offerings like Krisna.. This is doubtlessly the show man’s Jagte Raho. It comes with a sensitivity you simply do not associate with the film maker his style and grandeur.
Credit the film maker for his visible cross over. Even more important take a bow for a man who thrives on exaggeration to simplify matters and deals albeit simplistically, with the issue of terrorism. It is easy to fault his solutions. It is even easier to pick faults with the details. Yet pause and you would find that he has made a simple from the heart story that appeals .
There are different takes on terrorism. They are bound to be. It is seen arguably as the greatest problem handed over by the twentieth century to the new. It is easy to be judgmental about it. In fact it is the easiest response. Terrorism is a global face of national violence sometimes approved by governments , some where encouraged by it.
The protagonist Numair Qazi ( Anurag Sinha) has his early schooling in terrorism from the rough terrain of Afghanistan and comes to India with the idea of placing a bomb at Red Fort on independence day. He passes off as a victim orphaned by the Gujerat violence and conspires to live in the house of Gaffar Bhai (Habib Tanvir).
The strategy is to gain the confidence of Prof. Rajan Mathur (Anil Kapoor) a Urdu Professor and his wife a social activist Roma (Shefali Shah) Seen moving with a gang of unemployed youngsters invariably hanging around aimlessly he attracts the attention of the local police who are verifying information on the infiltration of a suicide bomber.
The story slowly builds up with Roma taking an instant dislike for the stranger and then being won over when he saves her daughter from a mob attack. Having gained entry into the household he slowly works a plan to gain an entry pass for the Independence Day parade. Life in all its hues and colours at Chandini Chowk slowly unfurl before his eyes. Time is ticking. So is his mind.
Withdrawn visibly and much to the disapproval of the Professor he sees life suddenly in a different light. He manages an n entry pass for the parade (a dig at how our system works!) and is all set to activate a liquid bomb. The final mind change talks of how terrorism needs to be handled. It takes on the serious question whether one can see and handle it as a mere law and order issue or can we afford a collective naivety of peace.
Yet when Dr. Mathur says that the protagonist came as a product of the terrorist world and has returned as a gift to humanity from India he make a sublime if naïve point. One wonders what the Mahatma’s answer would have been to global terrorism and what road he would advocate!! The script (Sachin Bhowmick, Ghai and Aakash Khuranna) is neat but lazy. Some times very simplistic. Some times even clichéd. At all times sensitive. As a Director Subash Ghai can be proud of making a film of the genre. This arguably is his best. It is truly a shift in the genre and a positive one at that.
Some fine performances add great value to the film. Seasoned by time Anil Kapoor proves yet again why he is taken seriously. Just the other day you watched him in Welcome. Now it is this. Amazingly under played, he still works within the frame work of our commercial films and understands its grammar without going over board. Debutant Anurag Sinha has a very defined and unidimensional role. He fits the bill perfectly. As to whether he is a good actor remains to be seen. Very studied and praise worthy performance. Habib Tanvir the great stage actor gives the film some great moments.
He adds great credibility to the script and watch the film just for him. Shefali Shah may be loud by her standards. Yet I suspect that is how the Director wanted her to perform. The character may be loud the interpretations not. This greet artist deserves a lot more. It would be to the eternal regret of our cinema if she is lost in the din and dust of our cinema.
Black and White is a sensitive document on terrorism without a solution. It is a story not a treatise.

Report: DVR could turn Apple TV into multi-billion dollar business
By integrating digital video recording (DVR) features into Apple TV, Apple stands to transform it's niche media hub business into a serious growth driver worth over a billion dollars annually, according to one Wall Street analyst.
Reacting to a patent filing uncovered by AppleInsider on Thursday, American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu said he sees DVR features like those portrayed in the filing cropping up in a third or fourth revision to Apple TV, turning the device into a real business rather than just a "hobby."
"We estimate AppleTV to be a very minor contributor today at ~0.3-0.4 percent of revenue or $100-125 million annually," he wrote in a note to clients. "We believe adding the ability to watch and record live TV could turn this into a billion dollar, if not multi-billion dollar business."
Wu said the cost of hardware components needed to equip the media box with DVR features is almost negligible, or about $12-15 in incremental cost per unit.
"We (as well as many others) have been clamoring for DVR and/or TV tuner capabilities since the introduction of Apple TV 1.0 in January 2007 and even Apple TV 2.0 with movie rentals in January 2008," he added. "We are pleased to see Apple listening to customers similar to what it has done with iPhone, with adding native access to Exchange server."
The analyst, however, took pause in his report to note that there have been patent filings from Apple in the past that have not come to fruition "yet." One example, he said, is Bluetooth stereo headsets which have yet to ship but "will at some point as cost of components decline."
Separately, he cited his own sources as saying that Apple and Sony appear to be in the final negotiation stages of bringing Blu-ray to Macs.
"Thus while near-term trends look difficult with a looming recession and a slow-down in consumer spending, we continue to believe Apple is well-positioned to weather the storm better than most with its strong fundamentals," he wrote. "[We] reiterate [our] BUY rating and price target of $175."

After Sammy is brutally assaulted and murdered by unseen forces, Nick becomes the number-one suspect. So begins British horror director Adam Mason's gore-fest The Devil's Chair, a dark and terrifying journey to the meeting place between insanity and the supernatural. Years pass and Nick, who had been locked up in a mental hospital, is released into the care of eminent psychiatrist Dr. Willard (David Gant), who is hell-bent on exposing the truth behind the killing. Accompanied by Dr. Willard and several of his students, Nick returns to the scene of the crime. However, the decrepit asylum hides a blood-drenched secret. With Dr. Willard's team in mortal danger, their only hope is the clinically insane Nick. Chained by memories of the horrifying event and the conflicting version of reality engendered by his psychiatric treatment, Nick is forced to fight the forces of pure darkness to save the team and prove his innocence. Events build to a brutal, gut-wrenching climax where nothing is what it seems, but everyone is ripe for slaughter. The Devil's Chair is a tale of a simple man fucked over by demons that are not just in his mind but, rather, all too real. Mason and scriptwriter Simon Boyes evoke John Hough's 1973 paranormal gothic favourite, The Legend of Hell House, fiendishly mashing it together with the crass literary stylings of Irvine Welsh and serving it up with a devilish wink to the audience. Operating under a tight budget, Mason displays considerable creative vigour. He is aided by Andrew Howard's intense performance as the brutal anti-hero, deftly flipping from pained vulnerability to savage rage. Complemented by an elegantly haunting score by Zoe Keating, buzzing flies, peeling paint and rotting debris are spun into a nightmare vision of a hell that might live in the darkest recesses of the human psyche. Apologies for being inactive for so long. A lot has been happening lately, but I'm back. Here is Race, a film by Abbas-Mustan which stars Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy and Katrina Kaif in major roles.
Music of Race is composed by Pritam. I don't know how good or bad it is. Just trying to catch up. I have heard a few praises though, so I hope you like it.

Wireless Application Protocol(WAP)
WAP is an open international standard for applications that use wireless communication. Its principal application is to enable access to the Internet from a mobile phone or PDA. A WAP browser provides all of the basic services of a computer based web browser but simplified to operate within the restrictions of a mobile phone, such as it's smaller view screen. The Japanese i-mode system is another major competing wireless data protocol.
WAP sites are websites written in, or dynamically converted to, WML (Wireless Markup Language) and accessed via the WAP browser. Currently, there are WAP site authoring tools accessible to many countries - tagtag.com (hosted in Slovenia), wapple.net (England U.K.), all2wap.com (Switzerland) and celladmin.com (Israel).
Before the introduction of WAP, service providers had extremely limited opportunities to offer interactive data services. Interactive data applications are required to support now commonplace activities such as:

wap is a protocol for wireless devices like multi media mobile
The bottom-most protocol in the suite is the WAP Datagram Protocol (WDP), which is an adaptation layer that makes every data network look a bit like UDP to the upper layers by providing unreliable transport of data with two 16-bit port numbers (origin and destination). WDP is considered by all the upper layers as one and the same protocol, which has several "technical realizations" on top of other "data bearers" such as SMS, USSD, etc. On native IP bearers such as GPRS, UMTS packet-radio service, or PPP on top of a circuit-switched data connection, WDP is in fact exactly UDP.
WTLS provides a public-key cryptography-based security mechanism similar to TLS. Its use is optional.
WTP provides transaction support (reliable request/response) that is adapted to the wireless world. WTP supports more effectively than TCP the problem of packet loss, which is common in 2G wireless technologies in most radio conditions, but is misinterpreted by TCP as network congestion.
Finally, WSP is best thought of on first approach as a compressed version of HTTP.
This protocol suite allows a terminal to emit requests that have an HTTP or HTTPS equivalent to a WAP gateway; the gateway translates requests into plain HTTP.
[edit] Wireless Application Environment (WAE)
In this space, application-specific markup languages are defined.
The primary language of the WAE is WML, the Wireless Markup Language, which has been designed from scratch for handheld devices with phone-specific features.
[edit] Maintenance and evolutions
The WAP Forum has consolidated (along with many other forums of the industry) into OMA (Open Mobile Alliance), which covers virtually everything in future development of wireless data services.
[edit] WAP 2.0
WAP 2.0 is a re-engineering of WAP using a cut-down version of XHTML with end-to-end HTTP (i.e., dropping the gateway and custom protocol suite used to communicate with it). A WAP gateway can be used in conjunction with WAP 2.0; however, in this scenario, it is used as a standard proxy server. The WAP gateway's role would then shift from one of translation to adding additional information to each request. This would be configured by the operator and could include telephone numbers, location, billing information, and handset information.
XHTML Mobile Profile (XHTML MP), the markup language defined in WAP 2.0, is made to work in mobile devices. It is a subset of XHTML and a superset of XHTML Basic. A version of cascading style sheets (CSS) called WAP CSS is supported by XHTML MP.
[edit] WAP Push
WAP Push, has been incorporated into the specification to allow WAP content to be pushed to the mobile handset with minimum user intervention. A WAP Push is basically a specially encoded message which includes a link to a WAP address. WAP Push is specified on top of WDP; as such, it can be delivered over any WDP-supported bearer, such as GPRS or SMS.
In most GSM networks there are a wide range of modified processors, however, GPRS activation from the network is not generally supported, so WAP Push messages have to be delivered on top of the SMS bearer. On receiving a WAP Push, a WAP 1.2 or later enabled handset will automatically give the user the option to access the WAP content. This is also known as WAP Push SI (Service Indication).
The network entity that processes WAP Pushes and delivers them over an IP or SMS Bearer is known as a Push Proxy Gateway.

[edit] Possible failure
WAP was hyped at the time of its introduction, leading users to expect WAP to have the performance of the Web. One telco's advertising campaign depicted a cartoon WAP user surfing through a Neuromancer-like "information space". In terms of speed, ease of use, appearance, and interoperability, the reality fell far short of expectations. This led to the wide usage of sardonic phrases such as "Worthless Application Protocol", "Wait And Pay", and so on.
Critics advanced several explanations for the early failure of WAP, possibly not realizing that it was a United Kingdom product which had to comply with the laws of European nations. An example is the requirement to utilize an ITU message-type that is specific to the French language with appropriate character conversions being deployed by the WAP message transmit and receive software [some comments in this and later sections are provided by the WAP inventor, Trevor Cutler of England]. Some are technical criticisms:
The idiosyncratic WML language, which cut users off from the true HTML Web, leaving only native WAP content and Web-to-WAP "proxified" content available to WAP users. However, others argue that technology at that stage would simply not have been able to give access to anything but custom-designed content which was the sole purpose of WAP and its simple, reduced complexity interface as the citizens of many nations are not connected to the web at the present time and have to use government funded and controlled portals to WAP and similar non-complex services.
Under-specification of terminal requirements. In the early WAP standards, there were many optional features and under-specified requirements, which meant that compliant devices would not necessarily interoperate properly. This resulted in great variability in the actual behavior of phones, principally because WAP service implementers and mobile phone manufacturers did not obtain a copy of the standards or the correct hardware and the standard software modules. As an example, some phone models would not accept a page more than 1 Kb in size; others would downright crash. The user interface of devices was also underspecified: as an example, accesskeys (e.g., the ability to press '4' to access directly the fourth link in a list) were variously implemented depending on phone models (sometimes with the accesskey number automatically displayed by the browser next to the link, sometimes without it, and sometimes accesskeys were not implemented at all).
Constrained user interface capabilities. Terminals with small black and white screens and few buttons, as the early WAP terminals were, are not very apt at presenting a lot of information to their user, which compounded the other problems: one would have had to be extra careful in designing the user interface on such a resource-constrained device which was the real concept of WAP.
Lack of good authoring tools. The problems above might have been alleviated by a WML authoring tool that would have allowed content providers to easily publish content that would interoperate flawlessly with many models, adapting the pages presented to the User-Agent type. However, the development kits which existed did not provide such a general capability. Developing for the web was easy: with a text editor and a web browser, anybody could get started, thanks also to the forgiving nature of most desktop browser rendering engines. By contrast, the stringent requirements of the WML specifications, the variability in terminals, and the demands of testing on various wireless terminals, along with the lack of widely available desktop authoring and emulation tools, considerably lengthened the time required to complete most projects. However, with many mobile devices now supporting xHTML, and programs such as Adobe Go Live and Dreamweaver offering improved web authoring tools, it is becoming easier to create content, accessible by many new devices.
No good user agent profiling tools. It quickly became nearly impossible for web hosts to determine if a request came from a mobile device, or a larger more capable device. No useful profiling or database of device capabilities were built into the specifications in the unauthorized non-compliant products.
Other criticisms are oriented towards the wireless carriers' particular implementations of WAP:
Neglect of content providers. Some wireless carriers had assumed a "build it and they will come" strategy, meaning that they would just provide the transport of data as well as the terminals, and then wait for content providers to publish their services on the Internet and make their investment in WAP useful. However, content providers received little help or incentive to go through the complicated route of development. Others, notably in Japan (cf. below), had a more thorough dialogue with their content provider community, which was then replicated in modern, more successful WAP services such as i-mode in Japan or the Gallery service in France.
Lack of openness. Many wireless carriers sold their WAP services that were "open", in that they allowed users to reach any service expressed in WML and published on the Internet. However, they also made sure that the first page that clients accessed was their own "wireless portal", which they controlled very closely. Some carriers also turned off editing or accessing the address bar in the device's browser. To facilitate users wanting to go off deck, an address bar on a form on a page linked off the hard coded home page page was provided. It makes it easier for carriers to implement filtering of off deck WML sites by URLs or to disable the address bar in the future if the carrier decides to switch all users to a walled garden model. Given the difficulty in typing up fully qualified URLs on a phone keyboard, most users would give up going "off portal" or out of the walled garden; by not letting third parties put their own entries on the operators' wireless portal, some contend that operators cut themselves off from a valuable opportunity. On the other hand, some operators argue that their customers would have wanted them to manage the experience and, on such a constrained device, avoid giving access to too many services.
[edit] Protocol design lessons from WAP
The original WAP was a simple platform for access to web-like WML services and e-mail using mobile phones in Europe and the SE Asian regions and continues today with a considerable user base. The later versions of WAP were primarily for the United States region and was designed for a different requirement - to enable full web XHTML access using mobile devices with a higher specification and cost, and with a higher degree of software complexity.
There has been considerable discussion about whether the WAP protocol design was appropriate. Some have suggested that the bandwidth-sparing simple interface of Gopher would be a better match for mobile phones and Personal digital assistants (PDAs).
The initial design of WAP was specifically aimed at protocol independence across a range of different protocols (SMS, IP over PPP over a circuit switched bearer, IP over GPRS, etc). This has led to a protocol considerably more complex than an approach directly over IP might have caused.
Most controversial, especially for many from the IP side, was the design of WAP over IP. WAP's transmission layer protocol, WTP, uses its own retransmission mechanisms over UDP to attempt to solve the problem of inadequacy using TCP over high packet loss networks.

Top 10 Most Depressing Quotes from Orwell's 1984

From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party:
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
furd - 2008-03-12 08:01:03

not to forget.... "underneath the spreading chestnut tree, i sold you and you sold me" genius.
@Digg - 2008-03-12 21:30:37
Ha! With your fascistic GoDaddy sponsorships and all! Fear Digg? Not after its owners become sellouts. It will happen, and it will taste of boot upon face. Fight it, violently.
Seb - 2008-03-12 21:45:30
Don't fucking quote the ending u silly noobs
mgroves - 2008-03-12 22:11:38
I would've selected "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever." as #1, personally. It just paints a picture of eternal hopelessness.
Alexandre Wilson - 2008-03-12 22:19:32
What a coincidence. I just read this book! Amazing piece of literature.
Digg User - 2008-03-12 22:30:28
Digg is nothing to be afraid of, it is the 15 min. hate in 1984 that never ends.
Scorpio - 2008-03-12 23:09:26
Many of the quotes are frightfully remenisent of current neo-con behavior and philosophy. If they manage to steal another "election", we may not be able to turn the tide of their quest for totalitarianism.
ryanwmu - 2008-03-12 23:32:54
quoting the end is too easy, although it is quite extraordinary. his writing style is beautiful. political satire has never been the same since.
O_P - 2008-03-12 23:33:07
"Seb - 2008-03-12 21:45:30 Don't fucking quote the ending u silly noobs" Quoted for truth.

"Sanity is not statistical" To be honest, there are better quotes in there, far more powerful because they raise serious questions about current politics and morality/philosophy, but still... nice to see a list made, and on digg.com as well :) And quoting the ending is a bit harsh in that it was such as shocker for me, I wouldnt of wanted it spoiled... any other book I wouldnt mind...
Shandooga - 2008-03-12 23:53:22
All this time we thought "1984" was written as a warning. Apparently, the Gatling effect still applies; some have received it as an instruction.
mike - 2008-03-12 23:57:20
depressingly familial. Homeland security anyone?
phase_shyfter - 2008-03-13 00:11:41
Brilliant masterpiece, only problem was that it was set almost a quarter of a century before the fact, maybe it was an intentional heads-up... and just to reiterate, good job on quoting the end, lmao...
1984 Orwell is ALREADY here... you Brainwashed Idiots - 2008-03-13 00:42:50

Big Thanks - 2008-03-13 03:20:00
The further I read, the more I wanted to read the book. But the last quote made me reconsider. Thanks for the spoiler, fuckface.
Morgan - 2008-03-13 07:36:51
believe it or not, my friend's kid got suspended from school 2 years back for writing his book report on 1984 and relating it to present day America. The teacher actually called the essay unpatriotic. Insanity..
Garret Jax - 2008-03-13 08:01:09
The ending isn't the important part of the book. After all the largest portion of the book lies before it. Furthermore, if we quoted every ending to every book, we probably wouldn't be spoiling very much. If he determines the last quote is the biggest impression, the best you can do is provide a quote you think trumps his.
Mox - 2008-03-13 08:54:04
The book is almost 60 years old! It's kind of ridiculous to never expect to hear about the ending at this point. There was even a spoiler warning. Just read the thing already.
Anonymous - 2008-03-13 08:54:38
Arguably the greatest satircal novel as well as a contender as the greatest novel. For those moaning about the spoiler at the end: the article is call "Top 10 Most Depressing Quotes from Orwell's 1984" and none were more depressing than the victory over Winston Smith. And those that refuse to read it now because of the spoiler, then you are not the likely audience, simply because, although it is a gripping read, Orwell clearly intended the reader to modify their outlook and actions accordingly and not just to entertain you for a couple of hours.

Great book. Good quotes.

Remember kids: BIG BROTHER IS A PEDOPHILE If he promises you a toy or candy, that means he's trying to fuck you. If he gets his hands on you, it may already be too late to say "no". Big Brother is a known member of the NAGCLA - North American Government-Citizen Love Association. If you see Big Brother in your neighborhood, break his cameras with rocks and never get into his van, even if he offers you a Barbie.
in4m8ionman - 2008-03-13 09:43:09
scorpio - you have a lot to learn my friend. You are being fed the party line and you are able to repeat it perfectly. I hope that some day you will finally understand that the real totalitarians are already here and they come from the left - they take your money and give it to others, they want to force you to get your healthcare from them, and on and on - all because they can't trust you to do it on your own because you are too stupid and too unrefined - you have become a member of the herd. I find 1984 fantastic because of all the things that exist already in society - I find it very interesting how Mr. Orwell talks about the Press manipulating reality to support the agenda. Happens every day. Wake up people.
Jesus - 2008-03-13 09:44:14
"I love how people quote a work of fiction like it's the bible." For all you know the Bible is a work of fiction too. Don't even get me started...

I love how people quote the bible like its some sort of non-fiction. Idiots.

I always found the 2+2=5 passage to be very moving, i was surprised that you did not include this one.

Amazing book and the ending was very depressing but brilliant at the same time glad you included it.

Good call on the left trying to control you. That's exactly what they want to do. But nope, we'll follow along like the good stupid cattle we are. I found this on the Internet off a different blog. http://www.hostbarracks.com/obama4.php It's a pic of Obama with the caption: WWBOD? LOL We're so gullible!

do you really read a list of quotes and not expect to see any spoilers? don't read the quotes then.

i believe that the emerging north american dictatorship will not be the last but a world dictatorship will follow soon destroying all countries and mergingthem to one nightmare.

Great quotes, but the scariest one, in my opinion, was: (SPOILER ALERT!) "Do anything to me! You've been starving me for weeks. Finish it off and let me die here. Shoot me. Hang me. Sentence me to twenty-five years. Is there somebody else you want me to give away? Just say who it is and I'll tell you anything you want. I don't care who it is or what you do to them. I've got a wife and three children. The biggest of them isn't six years old. You can take the whole lot of them and cut their throats in front of my eyes, and I'll stand by and watch it. But not room 101!" - the skull-faced man, 1984
The Magical Power of Focus
The quote above, as cheesy as George Lucas’ writing often is, contains a nugget of Jedi wisdom that I’ve repeatedly found to be true.
Your focus determines your reality.
It’s something we don’t think about much of the time, but give it some consideration now:
If you wake up in the morning and think about the miserable things you need to do later in the day, you’ll have a miserable day. If you wake up and focus instead on what a wonderful gift your life is, you’ll have a great day.
If we let our attention jump from one thing to another, we will have a busy, fractured and probably unproductive day. If we focus entirely on one job, we may lose ourselves in that job, and it will not only be the most productive thing we do all day, but it’ll be very enjoyable.
If we focus on being tired and wanting to veg out in front of the TV, we will get a lot of television watching done. If, however, we focus on being healthy and fit, we will become healthy and fit through exercise and good eating.
This may seem simplistic, but it’s completely true. This is the magical power of focus.
Let’s look at some of the ways you can use focus to improve different aspects of your life.
“All that we are is the result of what we have thought.” - Buddha
Focus on a Goal
In my experience, focus is the most important determination of whether you’ll achieve a goal or stick to creating a new habit. Not self-discipline, not rewards, not sheer willpower, not even motivation (also an important ingredient, however). If you can maintain your focus on a goal or habit, you will more often than not achieve that goal or create that habit.
If you can’t maintain your focus, you won’t achieve the goal, unless it’s such an easy goal that it would have happened anyway. It’s that simple.
Why does focus matter so much? Let’s say you decide you want to declutter your house — that’s your goal for this month. So the first day, you’re completely focused on this goal, and you get boxes and trash bags and fill them up with junk. The second day, you’re still focused, and you fill up a bunch more boxes and you’ve cleared most of two rooms with progress on another. This goes on for a few more days, with your focus being on this goal, and lots of progress made.
However, let’s say that a week into your decluttering, you decide you want to become a runner. You are now focused on running, and not only do you go out to jog for a few days, you buy running clothes and a Nike-equipped iPod and read running blogs and magazines. However, you’ve lost your focus on decluttering, and soon you aren’t doing much of it, because your focus is on running. In fact, you’ve added more clutter because you’ve bought all the running equipment and magazines and books.
Meanwhile, I have maintained my focus on decluttering the entire month, and by the end of the month, I have a nice, simplified house. I did it through focus.
This is why I am constantly advocating focusing on only one goal at a time. Having multiple goals spreads out your focus, and makes it less likely that you’ll complete any of the goals. It’s possible, but with a diffused focus, it’s much more difficult.
Even with only one goal, maintaining focus can be difficult. You need to find ways to keep your focus on that goal. Some good examples that work for me:
Read about your goal as much as possible, on websites and blogs and in books and magazines.
Post up reminders on your wall, refrigerator, and computer desktop.
Send yourself reminders using an online calendar or reminder service.
Tell as many people as possible about it, and post your progress on your blog.
Have a time each day to work on the goal, with a reminder in your schedule each day.
Maintain your focus on your goal, and you’ve won half the battle in achieving it.
Focus on Now
I’ve written about this before, but focusing on the present can do a lot for you. It helps reduce stress, it helps you enjoy life to the fullest, and it can increase your effectiveness.
Focusing on now, rather than the past (”I can’t believe she said that to me!”) or the future (”what am I going to say in the darn meeting today?”) isn’t easy, and takes a lot of practice. I won’t go into this much here, but read more:

Focus on the Task at Hand
Have you ever completely lost yourself in a task, so that the world around you disappears? You lose track of time and are completely caught up in what you’re doing. That’s the popular concept of Flow, and it’s an important ingredient to finding happiness.
Having work and leisure that gets you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness. People find greatest enjoyment not when they’re passively mindless, but when they’re absorbed in a mindful challenge.
How do you get into flow? Well, it takes a bit of practice, but the first step is to find work that you’re passionate about. Seriously — this is an extremely important step. Find hobbies that you’re passionate about. Turn off the TV — this is the opposite of flow — and get outside and do something that truly engages you.
Next, you need to clear away distractions and focus completely on the task you set before yourself. This is the part that takes a lot of practice. I’ll write more about this later.
Focus on the Positive
One of the key skills I’ve learned is how to be aware of my negative thoughts, and to replace them with positive thoughts. I learned this through quitting smoking and running — there are many times when you feel like giving up, and if you don’t catch these negative thoughts in time, they’ll fester and grow until you actually do give up.
Instead, learn to focus on the positive. Think about how great you feel. Think about how other people have done this, and so can you. Think about how good it will feel when you accomplish what you’re trying to do.
Also learn to see the positive in just about any situation. This results in happiness, in my experience, as you don’t focus on the bad parts of your life, but on the good things. Be thankful for what you’ve been given. More here.
What are your thoughts on focus? Share in the comments.

NASA Lightning Research on ABC News 20/20
They flew in a plane that was struck by lightning more than 700 times ... on purpose.
They were part of NASA's Storm Hazards Research Program, an eight-year research effort in the 1980's that helped save lives by improving aviation lightning protection standards.
Bruce Fisher of NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., was one of the researchers who flew through hundreds of thunderstorms on board a two-seat F-106B jet. "The lightning was the fun part of the mission," says Fisher. "The difficult part was the turbulence. Thunderstorms have lots of updrafts and downdrafts. We would go up and go down plus or minus three or four thousand feet."
NASA's Bruce Fisher will appear on ABC News 20/20
Friday, December 14 at 10 p.m. ET.
Fisher recounted his adventures to ABC News 20/20 anchor Elizabeth Vargas in an interview videotaped in a New York City office that was transformed into a studio. The program was addressing travel myths … so producers looked for an expert who could answer the question whether lightning could bring down an airplane.
Having experienced more than 216 lightning strikes on board the NASA F-106, Fisher has a wealth of knowledge. "Sometimes you would see a long jagged arc," Fisher told Vargas. "Sometimes you'd see a flash or sometimes you'd see sparks flying off the long nose boom that comes out of the front of the F-106."

In all the F-106B flew 1,496 thunderstorm penetrations and got hit by lightning 714 times. Fisher and the team learned a lot about how lightning and thunderstorms behave and how aircraft affect and are affected by them.
"Virtually all in-flight lightning strikes to aircraft, especially as you get above about 20,000 feet altitude, are triggered by the aircraft's presence … not a random intercept or a blunder, where you just unfortunately run into a naturally existing channel," commented Fisher.
The researchers also figured out where to fly to find the most lightning in a storm. "Triggered lightning strikes to aircraft are more likely to occur towards the top of the thunderstorm, particularly in the anvil," said Fisher. "Our old rule was fly high and fry."
"Fly high and fry" is not a rule that most passengers want their airline pilots to follow. Fortunately most airliners fly out of their way to avoid thunderstorms. Even so federal statistics indicate the average commercial airliner will be struck by lightning once a year, typically near the freezing level.
But because of the work done by the NASA team and its government and industry partners, technologies on aircraft, such as computerized systems and displays inside the plane and composite materials on the outside, are protected from the dangers of lightning.

"In a commercial aircraft that's certificated for all weather flight you're not going to run into a risk at all. What you get with a lightning strike -- with a commercially certificated aircraft for all weather flight -- is burn marks on the extremities of the aircraft," commented Fisher. "The lightning current does not get inside to the individuals or the equipment inside. The aircraft are designed to keep the lightning on the outside of the plane."
The design standards the team came up with are so effective that no U.S. airliner has crashed as a result of a lightning strike in decades

Who knew: Steve Jobs breaks rules
uest post: Venture capitalist, former Apple executive and writer Jean-Louis Gassée takes issue with Peter Elkind's rip on Steve Jobs in the recent issue of Fortune. For Gassée, Steve Jobs is Silicon Valley's Yves Saint Lauren, a creator who towers above his profession and defies rational explanation.
(Credit: Fortune)
So, what we have here is another Fortune magazine cover featuring Steve Jobs: Apple is now the Most Admired Company in America. But inside the magazine, the crown turns thorny. Peter Elkind tells us about "The Trouble With Steve Jobs." You see, he breaks rules.
The author starts with a lofty goal: "It may be instructive, then, to consider what drives the Steve Jobs adventure." Unfortunately, in a piece that is by turns schoolmarmish and leering, we're served a warmed-over compilation of Silicon Valley lore, of known and alleged infractions. No insight in sight. Try this: remove Jobs' name from the rap sheet. Now, does Steve Doe look any different from scores of unremarkable humans, good citizens or petty criminals?
Just for fun, I'm sure Peter Elkind will be a good sport about it, let's turn the projector back on the author. Let's scrutinize his appetites as documented in his writings: a book about the Enron scandal, another about a murderous pediatric nurse in Texas, and magazine articles covering Wall Street malfeasance. Does Steve belong to any of Mr. Elkind's favorite beats?
Steve might look like he's running a business but he is, in fact, a creator, an artist, not a business manager -- notwithstanding the terrific numbers. How do you explain Steve's string of unequalled creations? The Apple II, the Macintosh, Pixar (think Ratatouille's Oscar), reviving the Mac and Apple, iTunes and the iPod, Apple stores and the iPhone. Is this the result of a Mitt Romneysque crunching of market data or is it the mysterious firing of a maniacal engine of creativity and iron will?
There is no secret to pierce here, we're dealing with a mystery. Secrets are locks, they're to be picked. Mysteries have no combination, they leave logic helpless. Here, metaphors are in order.
Metaphors provide a bridge between ideas when the connection of deductive logic fails, when there is no lock to pick. In my metaphor, Steve Jobs is Silicon Valley's Yves Saint Laurent, a prima donna assoluta , no hidden pun, no typos allowed, a creator who towers above his profession and defies rational explanation.
Yves Saint Laurent
(Credit: Pierre Boulat )
Yves Saint Laurent made tons of money but couldn't be accused of being a businessman. And the couturier's behavior... Steve can't even begin to approach Yves' well-documented collection of deportments. (Alicia Drake's book on Saint Laurent and Lagerfeld is a terrific and instructive read.)
Of course, of course, we know society needs rules. Many in the Valley fear someone some day might find a way to nail Steve. Imagine the prize for a buck attorney or a dogged investigative reporter: set for life.
Still, do we want Steve's next Spring collection or do we want a Fortune writer to tell us how rule-abiding Apple's CEO is? Actually, no danger of the latter: no controversy, no advertising revenue. We don't break that rule.

[edit] Synopsis
Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa.
Political success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar (Hrithik Roshan). After having secured the Hindu Kush, he furthered his realm by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godavari River. Through a shrewd blend of diplomacy, intimidation and brute force , Akbar won the allegiance of the Rajputs. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey – the journey of true love.
The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar’s biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of Jodhaa – a love hidden deep below resentment and extreme prejudice. Jodhaa-Akbar is their untold love story.[4]
[edit] Historical Accuracy
The director has admitted that about 70% of the movie is based on his imagination. However, many of the events portrayed in the movie are based on real events. Certain Rajput groups claimed Jodhaa was married to Akbar's son, Jahangir, not Akbar. They also demanded a public apology from Ashutosh Gowariker. The film was not released in 30 cinema theatres in Rajasthan.[5]
Several historians claim that Akbar's Rajput wife was never known as "Jodha Bai" during the Mughal period. According to Professor Shirin Moosvi, a historian of Aligarh Muslim University, Neither the Akbarnama (a biography of Akbar commissioned by Akbar himself), nor any historical text from the period refer to her as Jodha Bai.[6] Moosvi notes that the name "Jodha Bai" was first used to refer to Akbar's wife in the 18th and 19th centuries in historical writings.[6] In Tujuk-i-Jahangiri, she is referred as Mariam Zamani.[6]
According to historian Imtiaz Ahmad, the director of the Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library in Patna, the name "Jodha" was used for Akbar's wife for the first time by Lieutenant-Colonel James Tod, in his book Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan. According to Ahmad, Tod was not a professinal historian.[7] N R Farooqi claims that Jodha Bai was not the name of Akbar's Rajput queen; it was the name of Jahangir's Rajput wife.[8]
Ashutosh Gowarikar's reaction was,
“ While making the film I did my best to go by the book. I consulted the best historians and went through the most rigorous research. And there are different names used for Akbar's wife, Jodhaa being one of them. In fact, there's a disclaimer about the Rajput queen's name at the beginning of the film. But to see that, the protesters have to see the film. ”
[edit] Protests & legal issues
Community's protests against the film in some states and it has been banned by the States of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand. However, the producer has moved the Supreme Court by challenging it. [9] [10] Later, the Supreme Court of India lifted the ban on screening the film for now in Uttar Pradesh and some towns of Uttarakhand and Haryana. The court scrapped the Uttar Pradesh government ban as well as similar orders by authorities in Dehradun in Uttarkhand and in Ambala, Sonepat and Rewari in Haryana. [11]

Ashutosh Gowariker hired a research team of historians and scholars from New Delhi, Aligarh, Lucknow, Agra and Jaipur to guide him on this film and help him keep things historically accurate. He clarified that the name of the film remains Jodhaa-Akbar, and not Akbar-Jodhaa as reported by sections of the media. Over 80 elephants, 100 horses and 55 camels were used in the movie. Name Of Main Titled “Azeem O Shan, Shahenshah”, the song featured about one thousand dancers in traditional costumes, wielding swords and shields at a grand location in Karjat. The budget was about 37 crores.
The first television promo was aired on 9th December, 2007.
The movie used over 400 kg of gold jewelery made by Tanishq[12]
[edit] Reception
[1]The film has received an extraordinarily strong reception at the box-office. The film has grossed $1.3 million dollars in the first weekend in the North American box office raising the possibility that this movie would eventually become the most successful Hindi movie in the North American box office. The film has also received a spectacular reception at the Indian box office.
[2]Hindustan Times, a leading Indian newspaper gave the movie 2 stars. Khalid Mohammed, reviewer for the paper calling, "Like it or not Ashutosh Gowariker, who is normally a fine and conscientious director, has miscalculated the technical logistics and emotional content of a period piece. Crucial detailing isn’t the virtue here."
[3]AOL India (Noyon Jyoti Parasara) gave it four stars, saying " Ashutosh Gowariker has proved that he is one of the best filmmakers we have today. While your heart goes for the love between the two protagonists, the film leaves you at such heights of emotions that you would literally be shaking with excitement! The film also comes at a very right time as Akbar indeed could be a role model for people and rulers today. The king not only had a secular vision, but also a will to know what the common man wanted, apart from being kind hearted and noble,"
[4]New york times gave the movie a positive review, comparing Ashutosh Gowriker to Cecil DeMille.
[5]Deepika Shetty, a famous Singapore film critic, called the film a " visual treat " and gave it a good 4 stars out of 5.

The Five Most Powerful Pre-Murder Monologues In Film
As you can probably guess, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL FILMS MENTIONED. This site has been linked to by Digg, Gorillamask, and i-am-bored. Welcome visitors! Feel free to check out the rest of the site or listen to our podcast]
For reasons that will become very clear as this article goes on, Daniel Day Lewis' recent Oscar win for There Will Be Blood prompted me to think of the art of the monologue and specifically, the pre-murder monologue. Murder plays to two binary aspects of our psyche: It both shocks the conscience and titillates us. This phenomenon of simultaneous revulsion and excitement goes as far back as the days of the Colosseum and stays with us in the modern age, every summer as we go to see the latest action killtacular blockbuster film.
People kill for all sorts of reasons. For pleasure, for power, for revenge, for fun. And when murderers open their mouths right before they do so, they give us insight into the will and the heartlessness that it takes to kill a man. Often the results can be profound, funny, and/or tragic. Here are the five most powerful pre-murder monologues of film:
Pulp Fiction: Ving Rhames Gets Medieval on Hillbilly Boy's
Hollywood latest films
http://www.ultimate-movie.com/
"I'd kill for this job, but the people I want to kill are the ones offering me
the job."
Starring Woody Allen, Tea Leoni, Treat Williams, Debra Messing, George Hamilton,
Mark Rydell, Sean Hatosy. Directed by Woody Allen. Rated PG-13.
I always look forward to watching the latest Woody Allen movie, and I dread
reviewing it. I risk not only repeating myself, but contradicting myself, as
well. Of his last effort, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, I wrote: "Allen's
plots are so slight that his films play like comic book issues, with the same
irrepressible character being placed in different situations. I think he needs a
new angle; Jade Scorpion is always tolerable, and sometimes even more than that,
but the formula won't be able to withstand a new installment." Now, with
Hollywood Ending, I am forced to either eat those words, or repeat them: you can
sense that his schtick is on the verge of becoming intolerably tiresome, but it
never quite gets there. His films remain entertainment akin to watching a
stand-up act: disposable stories, great sense of humor, one-liners that I quote
incessantly for months.
This one is actually a bit of an improvement over the last: as a "satire," to
the extent that Allen is capable of actual satire, its humor is more pointed,
its zingers sharper, his story less meandering. Shame that the entire movie is
essentially a gimmick, but as gimmick movies go, this one is damn near
incredible.
Allen again casts himself as a neurotic geezer surrounded by younger women who
want him. This is fine with us, because we're used to it, having knowledge of
both his films and his personal life. He plays Val Waxman, a washed-up director
who won an Oscar way back when, but has since lost "it" and is now looking for a
comeback project to help him escape doing deodorant commercials in Alaska. His
ex-wife (Tea Leoni) feels sorry for him and pushes to have him direct her new
producer hubby's latest project.
Waxman reluctantly accepts the proposal from the two peopple he hates most.
Things finally begin looking up: if he can just navigate his way through this
project, perhaps he can revive his career and stop having to sell out. Alas, he
becomes so nervous that he goes psychosomatically blind, which leads to a great
exchange between Waxman and his eye doctor (Doctor: "I can't see anything."
Waxman: "I can't see anything either!"). His agent (Mark Rydell) helpfully
suggests that the only way to save face is to just fumble his way through the
project and not tell anyone, promising that he will always be by his side to
guide him. Then he gets banned from the set.
Before passing judgement on the movie, it's important to ask why you went to see
it in the first place. Considering Allen's last couple outings, I doubt anyone
is expecting another Annie Hall. But if you still went after watching Small Time
Crooks and Jade Scorpion, Hollywood Ending shouldn't have disappointed. It's
more of the same, yes, but there's a difference between more of the same Woody
Allen and more of the same, say Adam Sandler. I will no longer be so na"ve as to
complain about the man repeating himself.

Feel and manipulate 3-D images

controller developed at Carnegie Mellon University allows computer users to manipulate three-dimensional images and explore virtual environments not only through sight and sound, but by using their sense of touch.
The device, expected to be used mainly for research, training and industrial purposes, comes close to the sensitivity of the human hand.
Using magnetic fields, the socalled haptic device replicates the response a hand might have to textures and gravitational forces, the devices convey the sense of touch.
The controller — like a joystick topped with a block that can be grasped — has just one moving part and rests in a bowl-like structure connected to a computer. Two of the controllers can be used simultaneously to pick up and move virtual objects on a monitor.
Researchers had built 10 of the devices, six of which were to be sent to other universities across US and in Canada, and that a new company, Butterfly Haptics, would begin marketing the device in June or July.
The controller, which will cost “much less” than $50,000, could enable a would-be surgeon to operate on a virtual human organ and sense the texture of tissue or give a designer the feeling of fitting a part into a virtual jet engine.
The interface might also convey the feeling of wind under the wings of unmanned military planes.

Computer world
March 7, 2008 (Computerworld) It seems these days that every Tom, Dick and Harry — or more accurately, every Dell, Acer and Apple — wants to get into the cell phone/handset business.
Dell was rumored to be partnering with Google on a joint cell phone project, a rumor I correctly predicted was false. The PC maker was also rumored to be interested in buying Motorola. Despite the flimsy nature of the Dell handset rumors, the conventional wisdom is that the company may at some point enter the cell phone handset business.
Acer, the third biggest PC maker in the world, is in the process of buying E-Ten Information Systems Co., a company that makes, among other things, Windows Mobile-based cell phone handsets.
Apple, which originated as a computer hardware and software maker, rolled out the iPhone handset last year, after making it big in the media player market.
The handset market is already crowded with far too many phones. If the PC makers are really serious about entering the cell phone market with distinctive products people might actually want, why not improve cell phone "awareness" of computers, and vice versa?
Can't they all just get along?
While cell phone handset makers roll out more and more functionality for phones, users are becoming increasingly ambivalent about all this "function overload." The reason is that it can be such a pain in the neck for our phones to interact with our PCs. Synchronization, file transfer and backup and other functions between devices isn't ready for prime time on most platforms, so most people just don't bother.
We work on documents, then go home and work on them some more. Why don't phones automatically carry the latest version and upload it to whichever PC we're using? Many phones can, and all phones should, serve as mobile broadband modems for laptops. Yet most users don't take advantage.
PCs would benefit greatly from awareness about the location of the user. Is she sitting in front of me? Is she out of the building? Imagine if your PC performed routine maintenance, or kicked into security mode when it knew you weren't around. Since we take them wherever we go, cell phones are ideal devices to inform our PCs whether we're in the room or not.
We like to set up our PCs just so, with color schemes and specific files and applications we like to use. Imagine if our phones could carry sets of configurations around and magically transform any PC we happen to be using into one set up just like the computer at home or in the office.
We work on documents, then go home and work on them some more. Why don't phones automatically carry the latest version and upload it to whichever PC we're using? Why do most of us still use e-mail for this?
The vision thing
Some visionaries are working on this problem.
One of the most interesting and promising projects in this area was developed by an unexpected source: The New York Times Co. The publishing company funds an R&D lab apparently. Two of its researchers, Michael Young and Nick Bilton, developed a technology concept called SHIFD.
The original vision of SHIFD involved the use of RFID chips embedded in cell phones. An RFID reader plugged into a PC informed SHIFD software that the user's cell phone was nearby. This was a wonderful vision and enabled all kinds of useful functions. While the new SHIFD prototype is free software only and enables you to drop content on the Internet and access it from any PC or your phone, the old version used the cell phone for location awareness. It was a superior vision that was abandoned because of a lack of hardware support.

Lessig Questions Pirate Party’s Existence
Lawrence Lessig appears to be in and out of the tech news recently - the will-he-won’t-he run for Congress, has caused a storm of blog-posts this last month alone. Having declined to run on the democratic party ticket, he has now started criticizing other parties.
At a preview of his new Change Congress project at the ETech conference, the Creative Commons founder responded to a question about the US Pirate Party, saying “I’m skeptical of the utility of something like the Pirate Party in the United States.” He went on to comment about the naming, referring to the ‘honest business fighting illegitimate thieves‘ battle that Hollywood portrays with “Call your party the Pirate Party, and you’ll reinforce that. The branding is not one that I would embrace here in the United States.”
Naturally, the Pirate Party of the US disagrees. “As a professor, he should know better than to advocate judging a book by it’s cover” says Andrew Norton, head of the US Pirate Party. “It’s also unusual that the man that fought Hollywood’s increase of copyright, should find fault with a party that only seeks to represent the general public, and what better title than the name that Hollywood is using for all citizens.” referring to a recent study,(pdf) which suggested that everyone violates copyright, and are thus pirates, every day.
“It may, however, be that he feels since we are called ‘The Pirate Party’, that at some point we may advocate Piracy, or at least copyright infringement. We do not, and will not, promote the breaking of any law, criminal or civil,” added Norton. “We, like Prof. Lessig, stand squarely behind the political process, and hope that people will use their ability to vote, to vote for the candidates they want, rather than the so-called ‘tactical voting’ which has turned current US politics into the sham it is. In this, we are willing and eager to work with the Change Congress campaign in any way we can.”
These sentiments regarding the political process in the US have suddenly come to a head, with Independent Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader condemning the current political setup. On an appearance on the hugely popular Daily Show Tuesday, he commented “The two parties have shut out the people in Washington. It’s corporate occupied territory.”
He later went on to comment about how the two parties have rigged things so it’s hard for any other party to even get on the ballot, which the Pirate Party knows only too well. “Many states bury their party registration requirements in vast amounts of legalese,” says Norton. “Other states don’t publish it clearly, and don’t respond to requests for information on it. Government is supposed to exist for the benefit of the people, but right now, it’s benefiting the lawyers, and those that can pay for them.”
Can Lessig really ‘Change Congress’? It all depends if he will see past names, to the actual issues they hide.

New Apple iPod's

Not to be confused with Digital audio player.
iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple and launched on October 23, 2001. The line-up currently consists of the hard drive-based iPod classic, the touchscreen iPod touch, the video-capable iPod nano and the screenless iPod shuffle. Former products include the compact iPod mini and the spin-off iPod photo (re-integrated into the main iPod classic line). iPod classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, excluding the iPod Touch, can also serve as external data storage devices. The new iPod classic 6G (featuring up to 160GB hard drive) has now found use as an external computer hard drive for some users.
Apple's iTunes software is used to transfer music to the devices. As a jukebox application, iTunes stores a music library on the user's computer and can play, burn and rip music from a CD. It also transfers photos, videos, games, and calendars to those iPod models that support them. Apple focused its development on the iPod's unique user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability. As of October 2007, the iPod had sold over 141 million units worldwide (stated in "The Beat Goes On" conference) making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history
History and design
iPod came from Apple's digital hub strategy,[1] when the company began creating software for the growing market of digital devices being purchased by consumers. Digital cameras, camcorders and organizers had well-established mainstream markets, but the company found existing digital music players "big and clunky or small and useless" with user interfaces that were "unbelievably awful,"[1] so Apple decided to develop its own. Apple's hardware engineering chief, Jon Rubinstein, ordered by Steve Jobs, assembled a team of engineers to design it, including hardware engineers Tony Fadell and Michael Dhuey,[2] and design engineer Jonathan Ive.[1] The product was developed in less than a year and unveiled on October 23, 2001. CEO Steve Jobs announced it as a Mac-compatible product with a 5 GB hard drive that put "1,000 songs in your pocket."
Uncharacteristically, Apple did not develop iPod's software entirely in-house. Apple instead used PortalPlayer's reference platform which was based on 2 ARM cores. The platform had rudimentary software running on a commercial microkernel embedded operating system. PortalPlayer had previously been working on an IBM-branded MP3 player with Bluetooth headphones.[1] Apple contracted another company, Pixo, to help design and implement the user interface, under the direct supervision of Steve Jobs.[1] Once established, Apple continued to refine the software's look and feel. Starting with iPod mini, the Chicago font was replaced with Espy Sans. Later iPods switched fonts again to Podium Sans — a font similar to Apple's corporate font Myriad. iPods with color displays then adopted some Mac OS X themes like Aqua progress bars, and brushed metal in the lock interface. In 2007, Apple modified the iPod interface again with the introduction of the sixth-generation iPod classic and third-generation iPod nano by changing the font to Helvetica, and in most cases, splitting the screen in half by displaying the menus on the left and album artwork, photos, or videos on the right (whichever was appropriate for the selected item).
Trademark
The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!", which refers to the white EVA Pods of the Discovery One spaceship.[1] Apple researched the trademark and found that it was already in use. Joseph N. Grasso of New Jersey had originally listed an "iPod" trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2000 for Internet kiosks. The first iPod kiosks had been demonstrated to the public in New Jersey in March 1998, and commercial use began in January 2000. The trademark was registered by the USPTO in November 2003, and Grasso assigned it to Apple Computer, Inc. in 2005.[3]
Software
iPod can play MP3, AAC/M4A, Protected AAC, AIFF, WAV, Audible audiobook, and Apple Lossless audio file formats. The iPod photo introduced the ability to display JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, and PNG image file formats. Fifth and sixth generation iPod classics, as well as third generation iPod nanos, can additionally play MPEG-4 (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) and QuickTime video formats, with restrictions on video dimensions, encoding techniques and data-rates. [4] Originally, iPod software only worked with Macs; however, starting with the second generation model, iPod software worked with Windows and Macs. [5] Unlike most other media players, Apple does not support Microsoft's WMA audio format — but a converter for WMA files without Digital Rights Management (DRM) is provided with the Windows version of iTunes. MIDI files also cannot be played, but can be converted to audio files using the "Advanced" menu in iTunes. Alternative open-source audio formats such as Ogg Vorbis and FLAC are not supported without installing custom firmware onto the iPod.
The iPod is associated with one host computer. Each time an iPod connects to its host computer, iTunes can synchronize entire music libraries or music playlists either automatically or manually. Song ratings can be set on the iPod and synchronized later to the iTunes library, and vice versa. A user can access, play, and add music on a second computer if the iPod is set to manual and not automatic sync, but anything added or edited will be reversed upon connecting and syncing with the main computer and its library. If a user wishes to automatically sync music with a another computer, the iPod's library will be entirely wiped and replaced with the other computer's library.
User interface
The iPod's signature click wheel.iPods with color displays use anti-aliased graphics and text, with sliding animations. Classic iPods have five buttons and the later generations have the buttons integrated into the click wheel — an innovation which gives an uncluttered, minimalist interface. The buttons perform basic functions such as play, next track, etc. Other operations such as scrolling through menu items and controlling the volume are performed by using the click wheel in a rotational manner. iPod shuffle does not have a click wheel and instead has five buttons positioned differently from the larger models. iPod touch uses no buttons for any of these functions, instead relying on a Multi-touch input style similar to that of the iPhone.
iTunes Store
Main articles: iTunes and iTunes Store
The iTunes Store is an online media store run by Apple and accessed via iTunes. It was introduced on April 29, 2003 and it sells individual songs, with typical prices being US $0.99, AU $1.69 (inc. GST), NZ $1.79 (inc. GST), €0.99 (inc. VAT), or £0.79 (inc. VAT) per song. Since no other portable player supports the DRM used, only iPods can play protected content from the iTunes store. The store became the market leader soon after its launch[6] and Apple announced the sale of videos through the store on October 12, 2005. Full-length movies became available on September 12, 2006.[7]
Purchased audio files use the AAC format with added encryption. The encryption is based on the FairPlay DRM system. Up to five authorized computers and an unlimited number of iPods can play the files. Burning the files onto an audio CD, then re-compressing can create music files without the DRM, although this results in reduced quality. The DRM can also be removed using third-party software. However, in a deal with Apple, EMI began selling DRM-free, higher-quality songs on the iTunes Stores, in a category called "iTunes Plus." While individual songs were made available at a cost of US$1.29, 30¢ more than the cost of a regular DRM song, entire albums were available for the same price, US$9.99, as DRM encoded albums. On October 17, 2007, Apple lowered the cost of individual iTunes Plus songs to US$0.99 per song, the same as DRM encoded tracks.
iPods cannot play music files from competing music stores that use rival-DRM technologies like Microsoft's protected WMA or RealNetworks' Helix DRM. Example stores include Napster and MSN Music. RealNetworks claims that Apple is creating problems for itself[8] by using FairPlay to lock users into using the iTunes Store. Steve Jobs has stated that Apple makes little profit from song sales, although Apple uses the store to promote iPod sales.[9] However, iPods can also play music files from online stores that do not use DRM, such as eMusic or Amie Street.
On July 3, 2007, Universal Music Group decided not to renew their contract with the iTunes music store. Universal will now supply iTunes in an 'at will' capacity.[10]
On September 5, 2007, at Apple's Media Event entitled "The Beat Goes On...", the company debuted the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store which allows users to access the Music Store from either iPhone or the iPod Touch and download songs directly to the device which can be synced to the user's iTunes Library.
File storage and transfer
All iPods except for the touch can function in "disk mode" as mass storage devices to store data files[11]. If the iPod is formatted on a Mac OS X computer it uses the HFS+ file system format, which allows it to serve as a boot disk for a Mac computer.[12] If it is formatted on Windows, the FAT32 format is used. With the advent of the Windows-compatible iPod, iPod's default file system switched from HFS+ to FAT32, although it can be reformatted to either filesystem (excluding the iPod shuffle which is strictly FAT32). Generally, if a new iPod (excluding the iPod shuffle) is initially plugged into a computer running Windows, it will be formatted with FAT32, and if initially plugged into a Mac running Mac OS X it will be formatted with HFS+.
Unlike many other MP3 players, simply copying audio or video files to the drive with a typical file management application will not allow iPod to properly access them. The user must use software that has been specifically designed to transfer media files to iPods, so that the files are playable and viewable. Aside from iTunes, several alternative third-party applications are available on a number of different platforms.
iTunes 7 and above can transfer purchased media of the iTunes Store from an iPod to a computer, provided that the DRM media is transferred to any of the five computers allowed for authorization with DRM media.
Media files are stored on the iPod in a hidden folder, together with a proprietary database file. The hidden content can be accessed on the host operating system by enabling hidden files to be shown. The audio can then be recovered manually by dragging the files or folders onto the iTunes Library or by using third-party software.
Equalizer
If the sound is enhanced with the iPod's software equalizer (EQ), some EQ settings — like R&B, Rock, Acoustic, and Bass Booster — can cause bass distortion too easily.[13][14] The equalizer amplifies the digital audio level beyond the software's limit, causing distortion (clipping) on songs that have a bass drum or use a bassy instrument, even when the amplifier level is low. One possible workaround is to reduce the volume level of the songs by modifying the audio files.
Hardware
Chipsets and electronics
Microcontroller
iPod first to third generations — Two ARM 7TDMI-derived CPUs running at 90 MHz.
iPod fourth and fifth generations, iPod mini, iPod nano first generation — Variable-speed ARM 7TDMI CPUs, running at a peak of 80 MHz to save battery life.
iPod nano second generation — Samsung System-On-Chip, based around an ARM processor.[15]
iPod shuffle first generation — SigmaTel STMP3550 chip that handles both the music decoding and the audio circuitry.[16]
Audio chip
All iPods (except the shuffle and 6G) use audio codecs developed by Wolfson Microelectronics.
Sixth generation iPods use a Cirrus Logic audio codec chip.
Storage medium
iPod first to fifth generation — 45.7 mm (1.8 in) hard drives (ATA-6, 4200 rpm with proprietary connectors) made by Toshiba
iPod mini — 25.4 mm (1 in) Microdrives manufactured by Hitachi and Seagate
iPod nano — Flash memory from Samsung, Toshiba, and others.
iPod shuffle — Flash memory
iPod touch — Flash memory
Batteries
iPod first and second generation, nano, shuffle — Internal lithium polymer batteries
iPod third to fifth generation — Internal lithium-ion batteries
Connectivity
Two iPod wall chargers, with FireWire (left) and USB (right) connectors, which allow iPods to charge without a computer.Originally, a FireWire connection to the host computer was used to update songs or recharge the battery. The battery could also be charged with a power adapter that was included with the first four generations. The third generation began including a dock connector, allowing for FireWire or USB connectivity. This provided better compatibility with PCs, as most of them did not have FireWire ports at the time. The dock connector also brought opportunities to exchange data, sound and power with an iPod, which ultimately created a large market of accessories, manufactured by third parties such as Belkin and Griffin. The second generation iPod shuffle uses a single 3.5 mm jack which acts as both a headphone jack and a data port for the dock.
Eventually Apple began shipping iPods with USB cables instead of FireWire, although the latter was available separately. As of the first generation iPod nano and the fifth generation iPod classic, Apple discontinued using FireWire for data transfer and made a full transition to USB 2.0 in an attempt to reduce cost and form factor. With these changes, FireWire could only be used for recharging.
iPod dock connector
Introduced in the third-generation iPod, the iPod's 30-pin dock connector allows iPods to be connected to a variety of accessories, which can range from televisions to speaker systems. Some peripherals utilize their own interface, while others use the iPod's own screen for access. Such accessories may be used for music, video, and photo playback. Because the dock connector is a proprietary interface, the implementation of the interface requires paying royalties to Apple.[citation needed]
Accessories
Many accessories have been made for the iPod. A large number are made by third party companies, although many, such as iPod Hi-Fi, are made by Apple. This market is sometimes described as the iPod ecosystem.[17] Some accessories add extra features that other music players have, such as sound recorders, FM radio tuners, wired remote controls, and audio/visual cables for TV connections. Other accessories offer unique features like the Nike+iPod pedometer and the iPod Camera Connector. Other notable accessories include external speakers, wireless remote controls, protective cases/films and wireless earphones.[18] Among the first accessory manufacturers were Griffin Technology, Belkin, JBL, Bose, Monster Cable, and SendStation.
Two designs of iPod earbuds. The current version is shown on the right. The white earphones (or "earbuds") that ship with all iPods have become symbolic of the brand. Advertisements feature them prominently, often contrasting the white earphones (and cords) with people shown as dark silhouettes. The original earphones came with the first generation iPod. They were revised to be smaller after Apple received complaints of the earbuds being too large. The revised earphones were shipped with second through early fifth generation iPods, the iPod mini, and the first generation nanos. The earbuds were revised again in 2006, featuring an even smaller and more streamlined design. This third type was shipped with late fifth generation iPods and the second generation nanos. All first generation iPod shuffles and the second generation up until January 30, 2007 (when color models were introduced) had the second kind; those that shipped after that date had the third kind.
In 2005, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority placed advertisements on the subways warning passengers that "Earphones are a giveaway. Protect your device",[19] after iPod thefts on the subway rose from zero in 2004 to 50 in the first three months of 2005.[20]
BMW released the first iPod automobile interface,[21] allowing drivers of newer BMW vehicles to control their iPod using either the built-in steering wheel controls or the radio head-unit buttons. Apple announced in 2005 that similar systems would be available for other vehicle brands, including Mercedes-Benz,[22] Volvo,[23] Nissan, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari,[24] Acura, Audi, Honda,[25] Renault and Volkswagen.[26] Scion offers standard iPod connectivity on all their cars.
Some independent stereo manufacturers including JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Sony, and Harman Kardon also have iPod-specific integration solutions. Alternative connection methods include adaptor kits (that use the cassette deck or the CD changer port), audio input jacks, and FM transmitters such as the iTrip — although personal FM transmitters are illegal in some countries. Many car manufacturers have added audio input jacks as standard.[27]
Beginning in mid-2007, four major airlines, United, Continental, Delta, and Emirates reached agreements to install iPod seat connections. The free service will allow passengers to power and charge their iPod, and view their video and music libraries on individual seat-back displays.[28] Originally KLM and Air France were reported to be part of the deal with Apple, but they later released statements explaining that they were only contemplating the possibility of incorporating such systems.[29]
Battery issues
The advertised battery life on most models is different from the real-world achievable life. For example, the fifth generation 30 GB iPod is advertised as having up to 14 hours of music playback. An MP3.com report stated that this was virtually unachievable under real-life usage conditions, with a writer for MP3.com getting on average less than 8 hours from his or her iPod.[30] In 2003, class action lawsuits were brought against Apple complaining that the battery charges lasted for shorter lengths of time than stated and that the battery degraded over time.[31] The lawsuits were settled by offering individuals either US$50 store credit or a free battery replacement.[32]
iPod batteries are not designed to be removed or replaced by the user, although some users have been able to open the case themselves, usually following instructions from third-party vendors of iPod replacement batteries. Compounding the problem, Apple initially would not replace worn-out batteries. The official policy was that the customer should buy a refurbished replacement iPod, at a cost almost equivalent to a brand new one. All lithium-ion batteries eventually lose capacity during their lifetime[33] (guidelines are available for prolonging life-span) and this situation led to a small market for third-party battery replacement kits.
Apple announced a battery replacement program on November 14, 2003, a week before[34] a high publicity stunt and website by the Neistat Brothers.[35] The initial cost was US$99,[36] and it was lowered to US$59 in 2005. One week later, Apple offered an extended iPod warranty for US$59.[37] For the iPod nano, soldering tools are needed because the battery is soldered onto the main board. Fifth generation iPods have their battery attached to the backplate with adhesive.[38][39]
Bass response
The third generation iPod had a weak bass response, as shown in audio tests.[40][41] The combination of the undersized DC-blocking capacitors and the typical low-impedance of most consumer headphones form a high-pass filter, which attenuates the low-frequency bass output. Similar capacitors were used in the fourth generation iPods.[42] The problem is reduced when using high-impedance headphones and is completely masked when driving high-impedance (line level) loads, such as an external headphone amplifier. The first generation iPod shuffle uses a dual-transistor output stage,[43] rather than a single capacitor-coupled output, and does not exhibit reduced bass response for any load.
Models
The iPod has been upgraded many times, and each significant revision is called a "generation". Only the most recent (highest numbered) generation and refurbished units of previous generations of the iPod is available from Apple for each model (classic, nano, shuffle, touch). Each new generation usually has more features and refinements while typically being physically smaller and lighter than its predecessor, while usually (but not always) retaining the older model's price tag. Notable changes include the touch-sensitive click wheel replacing the mechanical scroll wheel, use of color displays, and flash memory replacing hard disks.

Top 15 Concept Cell-Phones!

Concept Phones are great, as they give you an idea about what designers can do when they dont have to be concerned about the mundane stuff.
Here is a list of Top Fifteen concept phones that might or might not meet Realism.
15. TripleWatch
Though the idea of a cellphone watch is not so new, the TripleWatch designed by Manon Maneenawa has an interesting triple flip technique that allows the user to transform the watch into a normal cellphone. When used as a wrist watch, the phone has a speaker button that allows the user to answer the phone and hang up while driving.
14 . What You See is What You Get Concept
One thing is for sure about this concept phone...they could've named it shorter. Designed by Pei-Hua Hang, the phone's name comes from the fact that this concept no longer uses an LCD as viewfinder for the digital camera, instead it uses a transparent frame. And of course, interaction is made through a touchscreen
11 . Nokia 888 Communicator
Nokia definitely has the most interesting concept phones. Nokia 888 Communicator is a striking futuristic concept phone. The phone, which uses liquid batteries, speech recognition, flexible touchscreen and touch-sensitive body cover, is designed by Tamer Nakisci and won the Nokia Design Award.

Who is the Owner of Mumbai?
We all are aware from the politics currently going on in Mumbai City. Raj Thackrey and Bala Saheb Thackrey has decided to pull the vote towards them by igniting the burning issue of “Mumbai kiski hai?”.
Today Bala saheb thackrey has claimed that “Ek Bihari Sau Bimari” which means that one single Bihari is the reason for hundred problems. This is the direct attack to the leaders and peoples of Bihar. Our honorable ministers from Bihar has raised this issue in the Parliament. Uma Bharti has also demonstrated against Raj and Bala Saheb Thackrey in Bhopal.
If Raj and Bala saheb Thackrey can ignite this type of issue then who is responsible for this? How can they are allowed to say such things which are against the constitution of India? Why our Police department is silent? Why the state Governement is not taking any action against Bal Thackrey for issuing such type of articles?
Yesterday a few film stars like Nana Patekar and Salman Khan along with Suniel Shetty and Shreyas Talpade has supported the move of Raj Thackrey. Why these people are coming ahead in an issue in which they are not suppose to involve?
“Jago India Jago” a famous tag line of an ad, suggesting us for doing some thing. Common Indians. The time has arrived when you are require to take action against these people. If you consider your self an Indian then you must take action against them. please don’t wait for some one else, that if he will do something then I will also do it.
Do whatever we can do by our self. First of all, don’t ever go to watch the movie of these film stars like Salman Khan, Nana Patekar, Suniel Shetty and Shreyas Talpade. We are not reuire to take part in any demonstration against the movies in which they are working but just we are not going to watch there movies can do a lot against them.
Who has made them super star? We all Indians. If we can maky any one a super star then we can teach them a good lesson too. Now the time has arrived when we are required to change our own Country? We are required to choose India or India. No second option is there, we are Indians and we will choose our country only.

AMD Rolls Out 45nm Chips, Hybrid Graphics
By Damon Poeter, ChannelWeb
6:56 PM EST Tue. Mar. 04, 2008 Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) took advantage of the CeBIT spotlight to launch its 780 Series graphics chipset Tuesday in Hanover, Germany, while also unveiling the chipmaker's first CPUs manufactured with the 45-nanometer process.
On a busy day for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company, AMD also released a new Athlon dual-core desktop processor, the 45-watt Athlon x2 4850E.
The 780 Series, promising an "additive effect" with the addition of more video cards thanks to AMD's Hybrid Graphics technology, launches with an entry-level product, the 780V (ATI Radeon HD 3100) and a more powerful chipset for the mainstream client, the 780G (ATI Radeon HD 3200). The boards are tailor-made for Microsoft's Vista operating system, with DirectX 10 support a major selling point, as are support for CrossFireX and the energy efficiency benefits of AMD's industry leading 55nm process technology for GPUs.
"When paired with an AMD Phenom 9000 series quad-core processor or Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor, the AMD 780 Series delivers significant enhancements in gaming and high-definition experiences for mainstream PC customers," AMD said in a statement Tuesday.
More than 25 motherboards featuring the chipsets from OEM partners such as ASUS, GIGABYTE, Micro-Star International and Elitegroup Computer Systems are available as of the launch date, according to AMD, which also boasted that some 30 system builders across the chipmaker's tiered channels had signed on to build and ship 780 Series-based PCs starting in the second quarter.
Early reviews have been largely favorable, ranging from HardwareGeeks' rave review to the Tech Report's comprehensive testing of the 780G, which tempers its positive findings with questions about AHCI problems carried over to the SB700 south bridge from the old SB600.
A 780G-Athlon 4850e combination will fall into the $180 to $220 price range, according to AMD. Setups featuring the entry-level 780V chipset will cost even less.
Meanwhile, AMD also brought a pair of working 45nm CPUs to CeBIT, not a terribly long journey for the Dresden-fabbed processors. The chipmaker says its 45nm devices will launch in earnest at some unspecified time in the second half of this year, admitting to ChannelWeb in a briefing last week that last September's premature Barcelona launch has left it a bit gun shy when it comes to promising specific general release dates.
While AMD's chief x86 rival Intel already shifted down to 45nm last October, the smaller chipmaker contends that what will probably be a 12-month lag won't be as debilitating as some may think. Die shrinks are generally regarded as fairly boring technological advances, despite chipmakers' -- usually Intel (NSDQ:INTC)'s -- best efforts to hype their latest success at cramming tinier transistors onto silicon wafers. Ironically, that's due in large part to the relentless march of Moore's Law, the rule Intel founder Gordon Moore established decades ago for transistor technology. It's hard to get excited about something that happens every two years like clockwork.

Core name: Allendale, Conroe, Merom-2M, Merom, Kentsfield, Wolfdale, Yorkfield, Penryn
The Core 2 brand refers to a range of Intel's consumer 64-bit dual-core and MCM quad-core CPUs with the x86-64 instruction set, and based on the Intel Core microarchitecture, which derived from the 32-bit dual-core Yonah laptop processor. (Note: The Yonah had two interconnected cores, similar to those branded Pentium M, but comprising a single silicon chip or die.) The 2x2 MCM dual-die quad-core[1] CPU had two separate dual-core dies (CPUs) - next to each other - in one quad-core MCM package. The Core 2 relegated the Pentium brand to a lower-end market, and reunified the laptop and desktop CPU lines that had been divided into the Pentium 4, D, and M brands.
The Core microarchitecture returned to lower clock speeds and improved processors' usage of both available clock cycles and power compared with preceding NetBurst of the Pentium 4/D-branded CPUs[2]. It provides more efficient decoding stages, execution units, caches, and buses, reducing the power consumption of Core 2-branded CPUs, while increasing their processing capacity.
The Core 2 brand was introduced on July 27, 2006[3] comprising the Solo (single-core), Duo (dual-core), Quad (quad-core), and Extreme (dual- or quad-core CPUs for enthusiasts) branches, during 2007[4].
Duo, Quad, and Extreme :
The Core 2-branded CPUs include: "Conroe" and "Allendale" (dual-core for higher- and lower-end desktops), "Merom" (dual-core for laptops), "Kentsfield" (quad-core for desktops), and their variants named "Penryn" (dual-core for laptops), "Wolfdale" (dual-core for desktops) and "Yorkfield" (quad-core for desktops). (Note: For the server and workstation "Woodcrest", "Clovertown", and "Tigerton" CPUs see the Xeon brand[5].)
The Core 2 branded processors featured the Virtualization Technology (except T52x0, T5300, T54x0, T5500 with stepping "B2", E2xx0, E4x00 and E8190 models), Execute Disable Bit, and SSE3. Their Core microarchitecture introduced also SSSE3, Trusted Execution Technology, Enhanced SpeedStep, and Active Management Technology (iAMT2). With a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of up to only 65 W, the Core 2 dual-core Conroe consumed only half the power of less capable, but also dual-core Pentium D-branded desktop chips[6] with a TDP of up to 130 W[7] (a high TDP requires additional cooling that can be noisy or expensive).
Typical for CPUs, the Core 2 Duo E4000/E6000, Core 2 Quad Q6600, Core 2 Extreme dual-core X6800, and quad-core QX6700 and QX6800 CPUs were affected by minor bugs.[8]

Princess Diana enjoyed a normal sexual relationship with Hasnat Khan
Lover reveals Di sexual relationship
AMIT ROY
London, March 3: Princess Diana was on the contraceptive pill and enjoyed a normal sexual relationship with Hasnat Khan, the Pakistani heart surgeon confirmed today in an astonishingly candid 4,171-word statement read out today in the high court in London.
Hasnat said he and Diana had spoken of marriage but without going into specifics and revealed she was the one who ended their relationship after she had gone on holiday with Dodi Fayed, son of Mohammed Al Fayed, the wealthy owner of Harrods.
Hasnat refused to give evidence to the inquest currently examining how Diana died either in person or by videolink.
But a statement he had given police under his full name of Hasnat Ahmad Khan set out how he had met the princess in August or September, 1995, when she was visiting a patient at the Royal Brompton Hospital where he was a surgeon, and how their friendship quickly became intimate.
“I did notice that she was also very flirtatious with everyone,” commented Hasnat. He invited her to come with him to his uncle’s house in Stratford-upon-Avon. “I was very surprised when she said she would. We drove there together and Diana met my aunt and uncle. We had dinner in a restaurant and then drove back to London. After this, our friendship turned into a relationship.”
He said: “Diana was very protective towards me and wanted to shield me from the attention.” By November, he began to be pursued by the media which had rumbled the relationship.
Such detail has been provided that filmmakers will now be tempted now to make the Diana-Hasnat affair into a movie.
“During our relationship, I stayed with Diana many times at Kensington Palace and she also stayed with me at my place,” disclosed Hasnat. “We had a normal sexual relationship and I have no reason to think that Diana was ever unfaithful to me. Diana introduced me to Princes William and Harry. Diana just wanted her sons to know what was happening in her life.”
Hasnat also revealed: “During our relationship Diana was taking the contraceptive pill that was prescribed by a male gynaecologist who used to visit her at Kensington Palace. I never met this gynaecologist, but, as far as I am aware, the pill was prescribed to Diana because of our relationship and for no other reason.”
On marriage, he said: “Diana and I were very good friends and we never took what the other said that seriously. Although we did talk about marriage, we did not make a point of sitting down and discussing the specifics. It was something we would chat about generally if it came up in conversation. Neither of us ever proposed.”
He explained: “My main concern about us getting married was that my life would be hell because of who she was. I told her that the only way I could see us having a vaguely normal life together would be if we went to Pakistan, as the press don’t bother you there.”
He added: “I know Diana considered this an option for a while and she even went to Pakistan to speak to Jemima Khan about life there. However, after a while, she no longer talked about Pakistan, and although she did not actually say so, I got the impression that she no longer considered living there a possibility.”
Diana “asked Paul Burrell (her butler) to talk to a priest about the feasibility of us getting married in secret. When I found out, I said to Diana, ‘Do you honestly think you can just bring a priest here and get married?’ I thought it was a ridiculous idea.
“I think in her head she wanted to get married, but practically she had not thought about the implications. If we had married, as far as I am concerned, Diana would not have had to convert to the Muslim faith.” Diana appeared changed after she had gone on holiday with Dodi Fayed. She met Hasnat in Battersea Park. “Diana told me that it was all over

Hands On the Nokia N81 (Verdict: Really Loud Music Phone)
You've already seen photos, but you haven't yet been told why the N81, which just went live, is special. Unlike the N9x series handsets this one's designed around music and gaming, not its camera-taking abilities. That explains why its MP rating is a mere 2MP and it's not armed with a Carl Zeiss lens. That also explains why Nokia put the loudest speakers I've ever heard on a mobile phone on this thing:

Beer Garden s To Treat Your Taste Buds
As the summer heat knocks in, let"s get ready to beat the heat, with the world's oldest and most popular alcoholic beverage- Beer. Let"s give a treat to the taste bud under the open sky where no law holds the banner 'illegal'. Take a glimpse to the latest trend of the era 'Beer Gardens'.
Beer Gardens History
Beer gardens were first developed in Germany in Bavaria in the 19th century, during which time dark lager beer was predominant. A research states that the invention or rather a discovery, of the beer garden was a by-product of the invention of bottom-fermenting beer. Centuries ago, brewers figured that the fermentation would be slower and deliver a different kind of beer if they brewed in winter rather than in summer. In the 15th century, different styles for summer and winter brews developed. While summer beer

was a relatively light beer to be consumed within days, winter beers were comparatively stable and could be kept for few more months.
The nature of fermentation mystery was solved just about 250 years back. The answer to the mystery was the outcome of beer gardens. Brewers found out where to build cellars that would stay cool even in summer. Large breweries dug beer cellars in the banks of the river Isar, which allowed them to keep the beer cool. In order to further reduce the cellar temperature, the banks were covered in gravel and chestnut trees were planted As these trees not only bestowed their shadow on the cellars below them, but the big surface of the leaves evaporated lots of water, thereby effectively cooling the surroundings in summer.
Soon, the beer cellars were used not only to store but also to serve the beer. Wooden tables and benches started occupying their space, to make the beer garden a popular venue for the citizens of Munich. Today the beer garden is attached to a drinking establishment such as a public house or a German beer hall, to serve large numbers of customers.

Beer gardens in metropolitan cities today are the cheap and convenient way of spending a weekend under the cool shade of chestnut trees, avoiding expensive restaurants in the city. To add spice to the whole arena, spicy food is also introduced, that blends the culture of the land and the taste of the beer.
The oldest beer gardens till date are the Waldwirtschaft near Pullach and the Kugler-Alm.
Today, many countries around the globe have drinking establishments with an attached beer garden. In Austria, the beer garden is called guest garden (Gastgarten ). In Japan, outdoor beer gardens are enjoying increasing popularity, with many found on the roofs of department stores.

Pirates Could Crack the Vista Copy Protection

Pirate group Pantheon has just released a crack for a pirated, non-activated installation of Visa. With this crack this Vista copy protection is activated and becomes totally operational.
This Version of Vista (Home Basic/Premium and Ultimate) activates without going to Microsoft for verification. Instead, the licensing components “include the OEM’s hardware-embedded BIOS ACPI_SLIC (which has been signed by Microsoft), an XML certificate file which corresponds to this ACPI_SLIC and a specific OEM product key”.
The thing that this pirate group is releasing is a bundle of certificate files from different laptop makers along with OEM product keys for all sorts of Vista and an emulator. The software uses System-Locked Pre-Installation 2.0, and allows OEMs BIOS driver files (signed by Microsoft) for any manufacturer to be installed without the system running that particular hardware, and passes all the Windows Genuine Advantage checks. Means you are able to install the ASUS, Dell, and HP or Lenovo certificate information on any machine.
With this crack the Vista Copy Protection scheme has no meaning anymore!

Now, a biography on Rajnikanth
An ophthalmologist writing the biography of a film star is something unique. That is what Dr Gayathri Srikanth has done. When she chose Rajnikanth [Images] as the subject for her first book, she never expected any hype. To her horror, the book, The Name is Rajnikanth has caught the fancy of people not only in Tamil Nadu but all over India.
The book will be released on March 6 by Cho Ramaswamy, Editor, Thuglaq and the first copy received by the super star's younger daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth.
In this interview, Dr Gayathri talks about how it all began.
Your phone's ringtone is Rajnikath's dialogue from Sivaji. Did you choose it after you started the book?
Yes. After I finished the book, I decided that I must have a Sivaji ringtone. I also programmed it in my husband's phone though he protested saying he was a doctor!
Have you been a Rajnikanth fan for a very long time?
I am not a die-hard fan of Rajnikanth. I had the opportunity to interact with the fanatic fans of Rajni while writing the book. I like his acting, and I cannot relate to people who do not like Rajnikanth. When many north Indian friends of mine tell me not nice so things about him, I grow horns, fangs and claws to support him. So, I have been his fan from Dalapathi onwards. When I was in college itself, I had attempted to write a book on him; a very immature effort.
So, have you been carrying that desire all these years? What triggered off this biography?
Not at all. It all happened quite accidentally. Last year, I felt I have had enough of ophthalmology.
Enough of ophthalmology? But why?
That was because I became over-ambitious and overworked. In 2006, I had attended to 25,000 school children single-handedly. I was the camp in charge of the Duraiswami Eye Hospital which was started by my father in law's father.
Last year I also got selected to participate in KBC but couldn't get on the hot seat. All the participants got a book on Shah Rukh Khan [Images]. When I read the book, I came to know of so many new things about him. For example, I didn't know he was a hockey player.
Most of us participants were from South India, and we felt there were a number of interviews and books on Hindi film stars while we do not know much about our own stars. Then I thought, why not write books on Kamal (Haasan) and Rajni?
Why did you zero in on Rajnikanth and not Kamal Haasan [Images] for your first book?
I felt he was the obvious choice because he was the superstar, and the hype surrounding Sivaji was so immense. When I searched for him on the Internet, I found out that he grew up motherless as a child, and had a very bad childhood. Later on, he had to work as a coolie, then a bus conductor and lastly became the superstar. I found the stories had so many gaps. But I thought the rags-to-riches story of Rajni was very fascinating. So, I decided to write a biography on Rajnikanth and started my work in March 2007.
How did your family members react when you said you were going to write a book on Rajnikanth?
My father, who is a doctor, asked me, 'Why don't you write on Vivekananda or APJ Abdul Kalam [Images]? Why Rajnikanth?' many of my doctor friends also asked the same question. Someone asked me, 'Why don't you write a book on ophthalmology?' I told all of them, I only want to write about this man. How many people have the guts to come out and say that they have had a nervous break down, had many vices, etc? Not many own up their mistakes, but this man does.
How did you begin your work? Did you contact Rajniknath first?
No, I couldn't contact him. He was shooting for Sultan in Holland. So, I met his wife through a common friend. I told her, 'Ma'am I want to write a book on your husband'. She said there are a million books on him. She first thought I was yet another fan. When she came to know that I was an ophthalmologist, she was amused and gave me permission to go ahead.
I went to Bangalore and the first person I met was Bahadur. He then helped me meet all of Rajni's school friends. I also met his brother, a very simple man. I think simplicity runs in the family. Then I went to Mumbai to meet the friends he had befriended as a teenager but they wanted to remain anonymous.
Anything new you found out about Rajnikanth?
Many things. I also found out a lot about his father. He was from a lower income family and had a very tough life. His father would beat him a lot. I would say he had a traumatic childhood. It is admirable to have come out of all that and become who he is now.
Can you share one interesting aspect of his life which we do not know?
I am not supposed to reveal but I will tell you one incident. When he was working as a conductor, his brother wanted him to marry a distant relative. He liked the girl but the girl rejected him saying he was dark, plump and not good looking. I also found out that the mirror fancied (or fascinated?) him.
Is he a narcissist?
No, a narcissist loves himself. Here, the mirror is his friend which helped him overcome his complexes. He loved to emote himself in front of the mirror. He was quite conscious of the fact that he was dark. So, he was not very outspoken. The mirror was his companion when he was in the film institute.
Did you become an admirer of the man after digging deep into his life?
Yes, I was stunned by the way he has come up in life. I tried to find out the real factor that made him what he is today. It is not just luck, hard work or destiny; something more. It was tough to find out what makes him Rajnikanth.
Did you interview Rajnikanth?
I met him only in November 2007. I had almost finished the book by then. He was so sweet, simple and courteous. After talking to him for some time, I said, 'Sir, I want an interview'. But he was very non-committal.
After ten days, I got a beautiful letter from him saying I had presented the book stylishly, and that he was overwhelmed.
But he didn't want to give an interview as the book was written from my point of view as a biographer.
Did you present him as a superstar or as a human being? Is it a balanced point of view?
I think I have presented his life in a very balanced way. I presented him as a human being while he was a human being with problems. I presented him as a superstar when he became one. The book is not from a fan's point of view. The book is written by a biographer.
Was he a difficult subject?
Yes. His life is like a jigsaw puzzle; to sort his story out was difficult. One day, he would be drinking, another, he would be smoking, and then he would be in the Himalayas. In the midst, he acted in films too. That was the biggest problem.
He is famous for his style and speed. So, the book also has to be fast from the beginning to end. I did the story in a screenplay format.
Could you solve the jigsaw puzzle?
I think I have solved it. It is for the readers to say whether I am successful in solving the puzzle called Rajnikanth.
Is it going to be Kamal Haasan next?
One film personality is enough. My next book will definitely be on someone who is not connected with films.
The book will be released on March 6 by Cho Ramaswamy, Editor, Thuglaq and the first copy received by the super star's younger daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth.

Researchers say marijuana is less of a drag than cigarettes

A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine was completed on 5,263 teenage students in Switzerland and is producing some hair raising results. In line with a lot of studies that have been released in 2007 and 2008, this study boldly claims that it has found that marijuana use does not produce the fearful symptoms spread by anti-drug groups. The study seems to make a case that teenagers who use only marijuana, opposed to students who use marijuana and cigarettes are more active in sports, have better grades, are more socially adept and have used less illegal drugs.
As this might seem completely crazy to some as they nod their head in doubt, we’ll cover the actual study statistics so you can define your own truth. Before we jump into the specific study data, it is important to note that this study was completed in Switzerland where laws around marijuana are more lax and it is more socially acceptable to use the drug. America definitely has much tougher laws on marijuana use and possession. Now that we have established the liberal differences, let’s jump into the data of the actual study.
If you would like to review this study in it’s published format at the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine you can get it here. The study was carried out at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland by J.C. Suris, M.D., Ph.D., and a group of his peers. A national survey was given to 5,263 Swiss students that ranged from 16 - 20 years old. One thing to note that could throw a slight curve-ball in these results is the way the Swiss educational system is structured. In Switzerland at age 16 students decide whether to attend high school (students on their way to obtain a university education, 30% of 16 year olds) or whether to go to vocational school (apprentices who spend two thirds of the week working in a company related to their field, 60% of 16 year olds) and the other 10% decide to do their own thing. While the study did a great job of mixing responses from students attending high school or vocational school, it would seem the 10 percent of dropouts might have provided important data to the study conclusions.
Putting the educational system differences aside, the study produced clear data that shows some surprising conclusions. From all 5,263 students in the study they break down like this: 1,703 smoked marijuana and cigarettes, 455 smoked only marijuana and 3,105 abstained from both marijuana and cigarettes. Directly from the study the researchers state, “Our findings in this nationally representative sample of adolescents show that 6 percent of them use cannabis without having used tobacco and that one-fifth of current cannabis users (21.1 percent) declare never having used tobacco.”
When you look at the students that claimed to have never used marijuana or cigarettes, you find interesting and unexpected differences. The survey found that non-users that claimed to play sports tallied up to 76.6 percent but 85.5 percent of “marijuana only” users played sports. With the repeated mentions of amotivational syndrome found in marijuana users in other studies, the sports participation was definitely surprising. In addition to sports, 87 percent of marijuana users said they had good friendships opposed to 82.2 percent of non-users. A nearly 20 percent difference was found in sensation-seeking teens with 37.8 percent of marijuana users seekers and 21.8 percent of non-users sensation-seekers. The parent relationships didn’t have a striking difference with 74.1 percent of teens using marijuana less likely to have a good relationship with their parents and 82.4 percent of non-users less likely to have a good relationship with their parents. As one can imagine, it can be a challenge to have a good relationship with any teen on the parental level throughout the various stages of their teen years if marijuana is involved or not.
Looking directly at the original comparison between marijuana only users and tobacco and marijuana users, you see bigger differences in the sports and grade portions of the study. When looking at playing sports, marijuana only users were at 85.5 percent and marijuana and tobacco users only had 66.7 percent of them playing sports. So a nearly 22 percent difference of these users playing sports seems to show that cigarettes put the kabosh on extracurricular activities in school. An 11 percent difference showed up when talking about grades in school. Marijuana only users were tallied at 77.5 percent with good grades and marijuana and cigarette users were only at 66.5 percent. As you might expect, the grades suffered due to using too many substances at once. It was eluded to in the survey that teens using marijuana and cigarettes were more likely to abuse alcohol and other illegal drugs too.
Other important parts of the study to take note of were that marijuana users were less likely to have drank alcohol in the last 30 days and less likely to have used any other illegal drugs when compared to students who smoked both marijuana and cigarettes. One thing to note about the marijuana only users that seems to show a reason for some of the differences is they claimed they were less likely to have used marijuana more than once or twice in the last 30 days. So although the teens classified as marijuana only users were in fact using marijuana, they truly were not spending their afternoons toking up.
There are more categories and comparisons that were revealed by the study, but we have covered most of the more interesting ones. If you want to delve deeper into the study remember that you can grab the scientific report from the link above.
As a listener to the Business Shrink radio show and a reader of the blog we want to know what you think about this study? Does anything seem not to add up to you? We would love to get your comments and how well you think this study applies to American students and if it has revealed anything surprising to you. The efforts behind medical marijuana legalization have become even more heated in the last year and this study seems to add to the fire. Please feel free to let us know your thoughts on America’s
4 Things to Expect from The Clone Wars TV Show (and 3 Things Not To)

Who knew, back in 1977, when Luke Skywalker casually asked Ben Kenobi "You fought in the Clone Wars?" that such an innocent, off-hand question would spin-off into one of the biggest multimedia franchises in fanboy history? Yes, George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope did spawn arguably THE biggest franchise ever - take your blood-pressure pills, Trekkers - but that had an entire movie, starring Harrison Ford and Alec Guinness, as it's foundation. The Clone Wars, possibly the most popular Star Wars tangent since Boba Fett, was founded by that one sentence, a lot of fan love, and Lucas' legendary inability to let go of a good idea. Years later, after we witnessed the beginning of the wars in Attack of the Clones and their end in Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars have inspired novels, comic books, video games, toy lines, animated series - you name it.
And, believe us, Clone Wars fans have a LOT to be excited about in the near-future. Picking up where Genndy Tartakovsky's beyond-cool Clone Wars 2D-animated series left off in 2005, Lucasfilm is actively in production of a 3D-animated, 100-episode, PG-13 rated Clone Wars TV series that's scheduled to air on the Cartoon Network and TNT. If that wasn't cool enough, it was announced weeks ago that the Star Wars: Clone Wars series would kick-off with a theatrically-released feature - that's right, a SEVENTH Star Wars feature film - that will hit theatres on August 15, following Anakin and Obi-Wan during their wartime tours of duty.
Now, if you guys in the Stormtrooper helmets can stop hyperventilating, there are some hard questions we need to ponder about The Clone Wars series. As we mentioned, we've already seen the wars begin and end in the prequel trilogy, which begs the follow-up, "Are there really that many more stories to tell about the Clone Wars? Particularly when we already know the fates of so many of the major players in the conflict?"
We all know what happens to Obi-Wan, Anakin, Palpatine, Dooku, and the rest, so what can we expect from the TV series that will offer us something new? As our Jedi cups runneth over with these new announcements of theatrical features, we here at The Deadbolt have assembled a quick list of 4 things you can definitely expect from Lucas' new Clone Wars series and 3 things that... well... don't get your hopes up.
4 THINGS TO EXPECT FROM THE CLONE WARS SERIES:
1. New Recruits for Both Sides of the Force
Okay, we know what happens to Yoda and Palpatine after the Clone Wars, but that shouldn't make the series any less dramatic. World War II movies are still exciting even though we all go into them knowing the fates of FDR and Hitler. How do they accomplish that? By showing us the famous conflicts through different sets of eyes. This isn't to say that we won't be seeing Mace Windu or General Grievous from time to time, but the best way to expand the scope of The Clone Wars is to show us new perspectives on the battle, and it sounds like Lucas is prepared to do just that.
While speaking at the 2007 William S. Paley Television Festival, Lucas told Creative Screenwriting that some episodes would focus entirely on such lesser-known (though fan favorite) Jedis as Kit Fisto or Shaak Ti and was quoted from the event as saying that other episodes would feature a cast of only Clone troopers. Lucas also made news when the official Star Wars website announced that a new Jedi, the young Ahsoka Tano would be joining the cast as a previously unmentioned Padawan trainee who served under Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars. (Wonder why she wasn't mentioned in Sith? We're all assuming she dies, right?) Also, expect Asajj Ventress, the Darth Maul-esque female Dark Jedi to play a big role in the series, as well as Captain Rex, a Clone Trooper friendly will Obi-Wan and Anakin.
2. The Lighter Side of Anakin Skywalker
We're not saying that The Clone Wars is going to show us the softer, fuzzier side of the man who would be Vader, but it definitely looks like the new series will display Anakin's war-time heroism and bravery, front and center, to show us the definite contrast and depth of his fall from grace in Revenge of the Sith. In a video on the official Clone Wars website, Supervising Director Dave Filoni discusses how the series will touch on the newly-promoted, full-fledged Jedi Knight's "good side", particularly through his relationship with his comrade/former mentor Obi-Wan and his new Padawan Ahsoka.
While Attack of the Clones and Sith often featured Anakin at his worst (slaughtering Sand People or... you know... ALL of the Jedi, kids included), you can expect The Clone Wars to show him at his best, setting up why people like Obi-Wan, Padme, and the rest of the Jedi placed so much trust into that sad, flawed man. And, besides, as we know from Sith, during the Clone Wars, Anakin has to save Obi-Wan's skin ten different times - well, nine, if you don't count that business on Cato Neimodia - so he can't be all bad... for now.

India create History, beats Australia to win the CB Tri-Series

A dream came true for Team India and millions of cricket fans in the country! India finally managed to break the Australian dominance in ODI cricket and won two successive finals to claim the Commonwealth Bank Tri-series trophy. It could be recalled that India had never won the coveted tri-series trophy in Australia, which is considered as the Mini World Cup, though it features only three teams.
The entire country erupted in joy, as India registered a 9-run victory over "mighty" Australia in the second final of the tri-series in Brisbane. Chasing a victory target of 259, Australia lost three quick wickets with just 32 runs on board, thanks to a deadly spell by pacer Praveen Kumar. However, later Hayden and Symonds built up the Australian innings.
Just when Australia looked solid, Harbhajan returned and removed both Hayden and Symonds in one over. While Hayden was run out for 55, Symonds was adjudged leg before for 42. There was no looking back for the Indians and they pounced on the Kangaroos like tigers. The Aussies fought hard, but could manage only 249 runs in 49.4 overs.
James Hopes fought till the end, and was the last man to be out on 63. Hussey scored 44. For India, Praveen Kumar took 4 wickets, while Pathan and Sreesanth took 2 wickets each. It was an exciting finish and India won the "Best of Three" finals 2-0. Arrogant Ricky Ponting was right in predicting that there will be no third final in the series. And, it went straight on his face.
Sachin Tendulkar, who led from the front in both finals and scored a majestic knock of 91 in this match, set an example for the young team. Praveen Kumar, who took 4 wickets, was declared "Man of the Match". Nathan Bracken was declared "Man of the Series". Arrogance never triumphs. The Australians were beaten in the den, just because they never respected the opposition, taunted them, used unfair tricks and did not play in the right spirit of the game. They got what they deserved.....

Harbhajan in the frame again with India only one win from series triumph
India is only a match away from completing a limited-overs series win over World Cup champion Australia and Harbhajan Singh, for one, desperately wants it over ASAP.
Harbhajan's two vital breakthroughs in India's six-wicket win at Sydney on Sunday to start the best-of-three finals series were overshadowed by another chapter in a long racism row.
Australian media reported Monday that Harbhajan directed monkey gestures at the Sydney crowd.
Harbhajan was given a three-test ban for allegedly calling Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds a monkey during the contentious second test match in Sydney in January.
After an appeal by India and threats it would abandon the Australian tour, the racism charge was downgraded to verbal abuse by the International Cricket Council and a fine replaced the original ban. Symonds also was criticized in the review for his attitude on the field.

Symonds, who has West Indian heritage, was taunted with monkey gestures by crowds during a limited-overs tour to India last year, had reportedly told Harbhajan before this Australian summer that he believed the taunts were racist and offensive.
The Sydney Morning Herald on Monday quoted a spectator saying Harbhajan made the monkey gestures at the crowd soon after he'd dismissed opening batsman Matthew Hayden for 82 on Sunday.
Harbhajan, who had earlier dismissed Symonds for 31, had celebrated Hayden's wicket by shadow boxing with teammate Yuvraj Singh. That was a veiled comeback to comments last week by Hayden, who was reprimanded for calling Harbhajan an "obnoxious weed" and saying in a radio interview that he would not mind facing Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma in the boxing ring.
ICC match referee Jeff Crowe investigated the allegations and cleared the Indian spinner.
"After reviewing all available information, I conclude that there is no need to take any action against Harbhajan Singh," Crowe said.
Australian batsman Mike Hussey said his team was sick of the controversy and wanted only to think about leveling the finals series.
But India team manager Bimal Soni reacted angrily to the latest claims against Harbhajan.
"I think it is wrong," Soni told the Australian Associated Press. "Nothing has been done like that. They are making a mountain out of a mole hill. He did nothing.
"These stories I do not believe them and I strongly condemn them."
Soni said Harbhajan and the rest of the Indians were focusing on the Brisbane match and trying to ignore any more negativity.
"We only talk about the cricket on the field and we do not want to talk anything about these things," he said.
Sachin Tendulkar, who inspired India's Sydney win with 117 — his first limited-overs international century in Australia after 41 in other parts of the world — was expected to play in Brisbane despite an upper leg muscle strain.
"It's extremely good to go one-up in the series, the first blow is what matters," Tendulkar said after the opening win. "We don't have much time before the second final, but we have to get up and put up a good show. We are up for it and we want to continue this winning performance."
With Australia reverting to a regular two-team limited-overs series next year after 29 seasons of three-team tournaments, Ricky Ponting's lineup is desperate to at least force a deciding third match in the finals series.
Australia lost consecutive matches to Sri Lanka and India in three days after topping the qualifying tournament and also lost last year's finals series to England after dominating the entire summer leading into that.
"You would be un-human not to have a little bit of a hit to the confidence when you're not getting the results that you're looking for," Australia coach Tim Nielsen said. "Our challenge at the moment is to keep these (players) in a state of mind that gives them every opportunity."
The Australians also have extra motivation to force a third match, which would give veteran wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist and spin bowler Brad Hogg one more home farewell before retiring from international cricket.

Singapore is an island city located at the southernmost tip of the Malaysian Peninsula in South East Asia. It is well-known for being one of the richest, most well organised, efficient countries in the world, with a very high standard of living and an excellent skyline by the water. Singapore is an island with "1,000 shopping malls" or so they say. Despite the hot climate, it is a tropical paradise for most tourists. This great diversity of lifestyles, cultures, and religions thrives within the framework of a regulated society. Singapore's "FINE" city reputation is well-earned, and in fact, many will admire at once the clean, modern metropolis. Surrounded by artificially 'ordered' parks, its tall housing projects are populated by more than 80% of the population -- whose smiling native charms often belie underlying tensions about the way the island is progressing after 30 years of development.
Highlights of Singapore include some of the ethnic parts of town: Arab Street, Chinatown, Colonial District, Orchard Road and Little India.
South of Singapore are a few beautiful islands that are well worth visiting. The most visited is Sentosa island. It is a playground for people of all ages. See the Sentosa island section for more information.
This is incorrect: [A common misconception is that chewing gum is strictly not allowed into Singapore and that you will be arrested for that 'crime.' However, THAT IS COMPLETELY WRONG! The law states that chewing gum cannot be sold in Singapore, but it is PERFECTLY OKAY for you to bring in chewing gum for your own personal consumption. But if you improperly dispose of the gum, just as you would litter any other thing, you might be fined.]
It is actually NOT okay to bring in chewing gum for own personal consumption. Refer to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chewing_gum_ban_in_Singapore

Kangana’s new ambition ND Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor
Kangana’s new ambition
April 24, 2007 by parm775
Kangana has already proved her skills in acting and now she wants to try her skills in directing. She has signed up with a well known director, but not for acting, instead she will be learning the process of film making. From this we can see just how much Kangana is passionate about the industry.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor
It is in the news that Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor for their new affair which has been started between them after the break off with Shahid Kapoor, Kareena came closer to Saif Ali Khan. Saif made an open statement that he and Kareena are going around and they are happy with each other. Recently the couple had their first fight at a party. Farhan Akhtar gave a party for all his friends and among his good friends Saif is very close to him. And it’s very obvious that now wherever Saif goes Kareena will be there. It is said that the couple was having a good time at the party but the couple began to argue on some issue at the party and Saif screamed at Kareena to ‘Shut Up’ and this made Kareena very upset and she burst into tears and left the party with Saif. A close pal of the couple said that Kareena was very upset with the treatment she got and that too in public, but this is just a small issue which happens in all relationships and it is OK for them to fight. I am hoping that they show some good chemestry in their upcomming movies and every one likes their movies in future.

Kawasaki bikes and ATV's......

As I have said in the last post about off-road bikes, I love bikes, period.I would rather ride a bike than a car.Its much more fun riding a bike.I like bikes manufactured by Kawasaki as you know I have a soft spot for Japanese bikes.Japanese know how to make an effective bikes especially dirt bikes.Check out kawasaki ninja parts if you want more information on Kawasaki bikes.Kawasaki also produce ATV's which I like too.Have a look at Kawasaki made ATV's.I have never had a chance to ride an ATV so I don't know how it feels to ride it.The difference between ATV's and bikes is the accelerator is like a switch (you have to press it) but in a bike you have to rotate the accelerator and the obvious one....ATV's have four wheels.I think ATV's have just one gear....I don't know for sure. The ATV in the picture is a 2008 Kawasaki KFX. ATV is on my list of vehicles I want to own and ride.First one is a dirt bike that I just mentioned in the last post and the second one is ATV.I don't have that much interest in driving or owning a car but don't get me wrong, I love fast cars but I love bike more.

oh my god dirt bykes and ATV's one of my passion ....... it feels no good to drive a byke but not a dirt one..... dirt byke is merely amazing..... it's very easy to control a byke of this kind and it's shock resistanst power is also incredible as compared to those of racing bykes and the usual ones that we can find fleeting in the steets of kat-man-dooo....... and if u r a daredevil...... go for it try out some stunts ...... eventually u will cry ur tears out in truimph..... leaving u in a great state of contentment..... dirt bykes are simply amazing assemblence of the parts which leaves the rider with an everlasting satisfaction of riding leaving other bykes offroads!!!!!!

Yesterday’s budget impact has been quite pleasant for small-car buyers. Almost all small-car manufacturers have reduced their small car prices from 5,000 to 20,000 rupees. Hyundai, Maruti and GM had taken the new prices in effect immediately.

Budget 2008: Automotive Connection
February 29, 2008 – 8:04 pm by Ashish
Budget – something that’s been scaring the hell out of everyone. And now that it is out, scare is a past tense for many. It was heartening to see that the budget was focused towards the common man and the farmers. The budget focused on essential sectors like agriculture, education, health-care and power. Another major sector which experienced quite some action was the automotive sector. Read the rest of this entry »

No, the Tatas haven’t joined hands with Volkswagen, but Caparo Engineering, the makers of the T1 – arguably the world’s fastest, but without doubt the most extreme road-legal car – will contribute towards the Nano’s production.
Specific inner body panels will be pressed and assembled by Caparo in a facility in Singur that is adjacent to the Nano’s manufacturing facility. Read the rest of this entry »

Flight of fancy: Tata to produce air car this year
February 22, 2008 – 4:16 pm by General Disarray
After Rinspeed’s Lotus Elise that runs on water and in it, it’s the Tata’s turn to announce an equally imaginative car – only this one is much more significant since it might just become a production reality. It is a car that runs on love and fresh air. Okay, maybe not love – but it certainly runs on compressed air to drive its engine.

Say hello to the future - whether you like it or not
February 21, 2008 – 11:00 am by General Disarray
There has been much ado about India becoming a global small car hub. Hyundai is showing the way to other manufacturers by producing its i10 in India and exporting it to markets all over the globe. Everyone has now realised India’s potential and wants a piece of the action, which is fine by me – it’s going to raise employment, and the products will be exported, which will earn us valuable foreign exchange.

The name’s Speed, Rinspeed, and they’ve just made your Bond fantasies come true. No, not that kind of fantasy, but they’ve just engineered a Lotus that can travel underwater, just like car in the James Bond movie, The Spy who Loved me. They’ve even made it white! The Elise they’ve chosen differs from the movie’s Espirit in two major ways: it’s a convertible, and it is driven by three electric motors. On land, one motor drives the rear wheels, and the other two drive the screw that propels it on water, or under its surface.
